The first modern edition of eight contemporary chronicles covering the Wars of the Roses up to the return of Edward IV in 1471.The eight chronicles edited here are the principal surviving historical narratives of the Wars of the Roses written in English by men who lived through those wars. These are the best accounts by commoners (and one lord) written for their fellow Englishmen, produced within a few years of the events they describe, and have a particular immediacy.Five of these chronicles recount in detail particular events: The First Battle of St Albans (21-23 May 1455) and The Siege of Bamburgh Castle (June-July 1464) (batttles);The Rebellion in Lincolnshire (March 1470), and The History of the Arrival of King Edward IV (March-May 1471) (campaigns); and The Manner and Guiding of the Earl ofWarwick (22-30 July 1470) (negotiations). The remaining three describe the development of the larger conflict over extended periods: the Continuation of Gregory's Chronicle (1450-69), Howard's Chronicle (1461-70), and Warkworth's Chronicle (1461-74).They do not cover the last stages of the Wars of the Roses, since by the end of May 1471, it must have looked as if the conflict was permanently resolved. These accounts, although contemporary, have to be treated with caution. All of them are narratives of public events intended for public consumption. They remain, however, vibrant and immediate accounts of the events they describe in a systematic, modern edition.

The two texts in this volume, The Second Continuation of the Chronicle of Crowland Abbey and Dominic Mancini’s Usurpation of Richard III, are the principal contemporary witnesses to the Wars of the Roses, particularly to the opaque and controversial reign of Richard III. The Crowland chronicler – an important but still unidentified bureaucrat – is intimately acquainted with the workings of the monarchy of Edward IV, whom he admires and criticizes, but he is apparently troubled by the monarchy of Richard III. He tells much (but not quite all) that he has seen on the inside. Mancini – a foreigner sent to London on some unknown mission by a minister of the French king – is the classic outsider, working the streets like a foreign correspondent to piece together an account for his overseas sponsors. He tells more than he actually knows, employing his acute powers of observation and inference to compensate for his lack of access. Together the bureaucrat and the correspondent provide the core narrative of the Wars of the Roses. This new edition brings together both texts in a single volume for the first time, each presented with a clear facing English translation and accompanied by explanatory notes. Readers will find up-to-date summaries of current interpretations and thorough discussions of historical and political background – all keyed to particular words and lines and passages, making the coverage useful and accessible to a wide audience.

Edition, with facing translation, of chronicles from the late medieval/early modern period, concerning the history of Scotland.The seven chronicles edited here record Scottish history as it circulated in the late fifteenth century and the early sixteenth century in abbreviated and mostly vernacular texts, intended for a broader, less educated audience than was served by the great Latin chronicles of Fordun, Bower, Boece, and their successors. They reflect the greatly expanded literacy of the end of the Middle Ages, and the consequent necessity of educating a broader public in theoutlines of Scottish history and contemporary Scottish politics. They build their version of medieval events on Scotland's foundation myths and exhibit a distinct anti-English bias - indeed, the Scottis Originale began a type of Scottish anti-Arthurian tradition.
