From a gender perspective, Romans differs from many biblical texts. It contains few explicit mentions of gender, no household code and it has been understood as promoting universalism. This volume joins several feminist commentators in showing how crucial Romans is for understanding Paul's view of gender. Divided into three parts: mapping traditions in Romans, challenging gendered traditions in Romans, and gender and the authority of Romans, the concluding essays ask: Does scriptural criticism really do justice to feminist concerns? Both avenues and obstacles for feminist scholars interpreting Romans are pointed out.

This volume complements, but does not duplicate, the history of the exegeses of Romans since the 19th century which have been repeatedly presented in the introductions of various commentaries on Romans. This collection of essays explores major interpretations of Romans by the following major figures: the philosopher, Immanuel Kant; the theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher, the biblical scholar Albert Schweitzer, the theologian Karl Barth, the political theologian Erik Peterson, and the biblical scholar Ernst Kasemann; and how they are related to the "new perspective" on Paul, introduced by Krister Stendahl. Rather than tracking changes in exegetical approaches and conclusions (with special attention to analytical choices) among the modern interpretations of Romans, this volume deliberately follows changes in hermeneutical/theological choices. Focusing exclusively in modern exegetical studies of Romans, the distinguished contributors consider interpretations of Romans by philosophers, by theologians, and by biblical scholars.

This collection of essays integrates scholarly and scriptural interpretations, Eastern Orthodox biblical scholarship, together with biblical interpretations throughout church history. Unlike the Western interpretations that read Romans in terms of theological anthropology, the Greek Fathers do not presuppose such a concept and therefore each of the articles in this volume invites Western scholars and students to re-read Paul's letter with new eyes: with a greater sensitivity to the nuances of the Greek text; with an openness to envision what Paul is saying from very different theological and hermeneutical perspectives; and with the awareness that the Greek Fathers addressed particular contextual issues of their time.

In the first of a three-volume work, Daniel Patte presents three very different critical exegeses of Romans 1, arguing that all are equally legitimate and hermeneutically plausible. By expanding upon and respecting the exegeses of many erudite scholars of the last two centuries, Patte concludes that three families of vastly different critical interpretations are fully justified: traditional philological and epistolary studies; rhetorical and sociocultural studies; and figurative studies of the “coherence” of Paul’s teaching.Arising from a long-standing interdisciplinary investigation of many receptions of Romans in light of recent diversification of exegetical methodologies, Patte concludes that the interpretation of a scriptural text necessarily involves making a choice among equally legitimate and plausible alternatives; and second, that this choice is always contextual and ethical. When these points are denied (by failing to respect the interpretations of others and absolutizing one’s interpretation), instead of being a scriptural blessing, Romans becomes a deadly weapon against others – heretics, Jews (Shoah), and many others. The result is a threefold commentary of Romans 1 that is unique in its scope and thorough-going exegesis.

Daniel Patte argues here that when male European-American scholars interpret the Bible to produce a universally legitimate reading, they silence the Bible itself. Their reading practices exclude feminist, African American, and other so-called "minority" readings, as well as the interpretations of conservative and liberal laity. He further claims that ethical accountability requires recognizing that all exegesis consists of bringing critical understanding to ordinary readings, especially faith interpretations. Patte concludes that biblical studies must affirm the legitimacy of diverse ordinary readings and lead to an open discussion of the relative value of these readings.

Part of the series "Romans Through History and Culture", this book explores Augustine's hermeneutics. His reliance on biblical interpretation as a pillar of Christian life is examined in light of his writings on a single book: Paul's Letter to the Romans. One contributor to the anthology also looks at the effect of Augustine's readings of Paul have had on Pauline critical studies.
