Comenzo a ensenar en Oxford... un profesor muy exitoso como promotor de la literatura latinoamericana... En 1973 publico, en ingles, un libro de ensayos, Modern Latin American Literature, por desgracia nunca traducido al espanol, que es uno de los mas lucidos y penetrantes analisis de la contribucion de los poetas y prosistas latinoamericanos a la renovacion de la literatura contemporanea. Mario Vargas LlosaDavid Gallagher encarnaba, para mi padre, lo contrario de lo que encarnan tantos intelectuales de nuestro tiempo: integridad intelectual, ausencia de pedanteria a la hora de enjuiciar una obra literaria, claridad expositiva, una vasta cultura y, por supuesto, un amor profundo por la literatura. Aunque tuvo ocasion de leer varios de los textos que aparecen en esta magnifica compilacion, le habria dado mucha satisfaccion (y cierto rubor) leer completo este conjunto de observaciones tan perspicaces como iluminadoras sobre su obra, asi como las anecdotas nostalgicas que lo salpican.
