John A. Broadus (1827-1895) was a founding faculty member and the second president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He preached to Robert E. Lee’s army during the Civil War and later wrote the enduring classic, A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. A. T. Robertson called him "one of the finest fruits of modern Christianity." Charles Spurgeon deemed him the "greatest of living preachers." A. H. Newman described Broadus as "perhaps the greatest man the Baptists have produced."
Indeed, the legacy of Broadus lives on today, reflecting a model author, teacher, preacher, scholar, seminary leader, and denominational statesman. This timely new biography, a collection of ten independently contributed chapters that address his work from various angles, presents Broadus as a shining example of balance, careful thinking, and biblical faithfulness in a season when Southern Baptists are seeking to re-establish a new consensus and move forward in the twenty-first century.

An alternative to the controversial New Baptist Covenant, Southern Baptist Consensus and Renewal calls Southern Baptists to boldly unite and renew their commitment to the gospel, biblical authority, and their confessional heritage.
Endorsements
"Finally, Southern Baptists of the twenty-first century are shown the way back home. David Dockery, in the convincing and studied manner so typical of all his writings, calls for a fresh return to our theological, educational, and missiological roots . . . (providing) a compass by which to steer us out of our doldrums and onto the high seas of effectiveness."
—Tom Eliff, senior vice president, International Mission Board, and former president, Southern Baptist Convention.
"A comprehensive and challenging mandate . . . It calls our denomination to nothing less than a Great Commission resurgence rooted in the great biblical and theological truths that we hold in common. It is my prayer that this book will not only be read, but that its vision will be embraced."
—Daniel L. Akin, president, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Southern Baptists stand at a crossroads today . . . David Dockery, one of our finest scholar-statesmen, points the way toward a more constructive future for a denomination called to reclaim its founding purpose of ‘eliciting, combining, and directing’ its energies in sharing the message of Jesus Christ with all the world."
—Timothy George, founding dean, Beeson Divinity School
"These are turbulent days in the Southern Baptist Convention . . . Our churches are struggling to reach people in a postmodern culture. Dockery reminds us that we cannot yield the gains the Convention has made in its commitment to truth and doctrinal fidelity. Yet, he offers a plan for renewal and consensus within our confessional heritage."
—Thom S. Rainer, president, Lifeway Christian Resources; coauthor of Simple Church
"A skillful analysis of the forces and factors which have made us who we are; a masterful discussion of theological issues that should pull us together and point us toward unity."
—Frank S. Page, president, Southern Baptist Convention

Baptists'' Timothy George and David S. Dockery update and substantially reshape their classic book in an effort to preserve and discover the Baptists'' “underappreciated contribution to Christianity''s theological heritage.” George and Dockery have re-arranged this volume—considerably abbreviated from the seven-hundred page first edition—in light of the Southern Baptist identity controversy.

"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2)
Renewing Minds serves as a clear introduction to the field of higher Christian education, focusing on the distinctive, important role of Christian-influenced learning—both in the Kingdom of God and in the academic world.
Union University president David S. Dockery writes for administrators, trustees, church leaders, faculty, and staff who are just beginning their service or association with a Christ-centered institution, and also to students and parents who are considering a Christian college or university.
Chapters include: "Loving God with Our Minds," "Renewing Minds, Serving Church and Society," "Shaping a Christian Worldview," "Reclaiming the Christian Intellectual Tradition," "Integrating Faith and Learning," "Envisioning a Shared Community of Tradition, Belonging, and Renewing Minds," "Establishing a Grace-Filled Academic Community," "Developing a Theology for Christian Higher Education," and "Thinking Globally about the Future."
New source information and footnotes have been added to this second edition. While the chapters still reflect their original shape as formal addresses given in various settings, this revised and updated edition formats the book in a way that is more consistent with academic rather than popular expectations.
