Premiering in September of 2006, the weekly NBC television series Heroes was an immediate commercial and critical hit, lasting four successful seasons. Heroes follows a group of interrelated characters who discover they have superhuman powers, with each successive episode exploring how these people react to and utilize their powers for good or for evil. This collection of essays explores a variety of issues surrounding Heroes, examining the series' content, marketing and reception. Also investigated is the show's fusion of "cult" and mainstream elements of television, analyzing its ability to combine so-called lowbrow elements (comic books and superheroes) with a high-quality television form prizing such factors as moral ambiguity and depth of characterization--and what this blending process suggests about the current hybrid state of genre television, and about the medium as a whole.

From early examples such as Star Trek and Sapphire and Steel to more contemporary shows including Life on Mars and The Vampire Diaries, time has frequently been used as a device to allow programme makers to experiment stylistically and challenge established ways of thinking. Time on TV provides a range of exciting, accessible, yet intellectually rigorous essays that consider the many and varied ways in which telefantasy shows have explored this subject, providing the reader with a greater understanding of the importance of time to the success of genre on the small screen.

This book presents the foundations of the theory of groups and semigroups acting isometrically on Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces. Particular emphasis is paid to the geometry of their limit sets and on behavior not found in the proper setting. The authors provide a number of examples of groups which exhibit a wide range of phenomena not to be found in the finite-dimensional theory. The book contains both introductory material to help beginners as well as new research results, and closes with a list of attractive unsolved problems.

Ebook available to libraries exclusively as part of the JSTOR Path to Open initiative.Given the USA’s long-held “taste for the monstrous in all its forms” (Scott W.Poole), coupled with its love for “the colossal, the exaggerated and the brash” (William Tsutsui), it is not surprising that the giant monster movie has long been a key part of the nation’s cinematic landscape; yet up until recently the genre has been largely neglected by scholars. The US Giant Monster Movie: Size Does Matter addresses this gap, providing a richly detailed and compelling critical account of this vital but often overlooked instance of popular cinema. Using Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the carnivalesque to help inform a discussion of examples ranging from The Lost World (1925) and King Kong (1933), up to recent CGI blockbusters including Cloverfield (2008), Pacific Rim (2013), and Godzilla vs Kong (2021), the book charts chronological developments in the form; examines its wide-ranging thematic concerns; and explores the reasons for the continuing commercial success of the US giant monster movie. This comprehensive study will appeal to those with an interest in Film Studies, American Studies, popular cinema and culture, as well as anyone who wants to know more about this most spectacular and often subversive of genres

In this debut crime-horror story collection, David Simmons drags you into a phantasmagoric Baltimore where the dead refuse to stay dead and the living claw for meaning.Hallucinatory and darkly comic love stories are set against the gritty backdrop of the city, where guns and drugs collide with tales of paranoia, pursuit, and revenge. Here, a middle school biology class spirals into a surreal vivisection. A man returns home each night to chew the freshly grown fingers off a corpse to avoid going into withdrawal. A monster in an upstairs apartment kills people, records songs about it, and retweets his victims postmortem. In these stories, love arrives wearing the mask of addiction and absurdity. If Brian Evenson and Ottessa Moshfegh wrote for The Wire you'd get the unique style of David Simmons. Fans of body horror, transgressive fiction, and literary surrealism will find themselves unable to look away as Simmons explores the intersections of violence and dark humor with a razor-sharp voice.

Learning to See School Systems: Power, Practice, and Improvement in Public Education is a volume dedicated to the goal of improving school systems. In 1513, Niccolò Machiavelli wrote The Prince to help rulers understand the realities of power. Five hundred years later, Dr. Michael R. L. Odell — educator, researcher, and amused observer of Texas school systems — offers a modern reflection for those who lead the nation's classrooms and districts. Learning to See School Systems is both satire and system map: a handbook for anyone attempting to lead improvement in institutions designed to resist it gracefully. Across twelve chapters, it reveals how public education mirrors the politics of Florence—ambition, reform, accountability, and fortune disguised as data. Each chapter blends humor with hard truth: board relations as diplomacy, improvement plans as rituals, dashboards as illusion, crises as curriculum. Beneath the wit lies a serious purpose—to help educators see their districts as living systems, governed by patterns that Improvement Science now names but Machiavelli already understood. For teachers, principals, superintendents, and school board members alike, Learning to See School Systems is a mirror of modern schooling—ironic, affectionate, and uncomfortably accurate. Read it for laughter. Keep it for survival. Share it with anyone about to lead their first staff meeting. "He who governs schools must learn to rule hearts that believe themselves ungoverned." — from Learning to See School Systems Perfect for courses such as: School Improvement and Reform; School Policy; Organizational Leadership and Change

Integrating care across disciplines and organisations around the needs of the person with diabetes has been proposed as an approach that could improve care while reducing cost- but has it and can it? Integrated Diabetes Care- A Multidisciplinary Approach collates evidence of worldwide approaches to both horizontal integration (across disciplines) and vertical integration (across organizations) in diabetes care and describe what was done, what worked and what appeared to be the barriers to achieving the goals of the programmes. Evidence is sought from groups who have developed different approaches to integrating diabetes care in different health systems (eg insurance vs tax payer funded, single vs multiple organization, published vs unpublished). A final chapter brings the evidence together for a final discussion about what seems to work and what does not.
