This edited volume presents innovative current research in the field of Science Education. The chapter’s deal with a wide variety of topics and research approaches, conducted in a range of contexts and settings. Together they make a strong contribution to knowledge on science teaching and learning. The book consists of selected presentations from the 12th European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) Conference, held in Dublin, Ireland from 21st to 25th August, 2017. The ESERA community is made up of professionals with diverse disciplinary backgrounds from natural sciences to social sciences. This diversity enables a rich understanding of cognitive and affective aspects of science teaching and learning. The studies in this book will stimulate discussion and interest in finding new ways of implementing and researching science education for the future. The twenty-two chapters in this book are presented in four parts highlighting innovative approaches toschool science, emerging identities in science education, approaches to developing learning and competence progressions, and ways of enhancing science teacher education. This collection of studies showcases current research orientations in science education and is of interest to science teachers, teacher educators and science education researchers around the world with a commitment to bridging research and practice in science teaching and learning.

This book discusses novel research on and practices in the field of physics teaching and learning. It gathers selected high-quality studies that were presented at the GIREP-ICPE-EPEC 2017 conference, which was jointly organised by the International Research Group on Physics Teaching (GIREP); European Physical Society – Physics Education Division, and the Physics Education Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). The respective chapters address a wide variety of topics and approaches, pursued in various contexts and settings, all of which represent valuable contributions to the field of physics education research. Examples include the design of curricula and strategies to develop student competencies—including knowledge, skills, attitudes and values; workshop approaches to teacher education; and pedagogical strategies used to engage and motivate students. This book shares essential insights into current research on physics education and will be of interest to physics teachers, teacher educators and physics education researchers around the world who are working to combine research and practice in physics teaching and learning.

In the context of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and the EU’s Water Resilience Strategy and against the backdrop of the escalating climate and water crisis, this book presents a timely, urgent, and comprehensive exploration of water from multiple disciplinary lenses. Climate change is intensifying water-related challenges globally—affecting water availability, exacerbating extreme weather events, and undermining the predictability and safety of water supplies. As such, this book argues that the climate crisis is fundamentally a water crisis, and that an integrated, systems-level approach is critical to understanding and addressing it.The book will explore the interconnected roles of chemistry, biology, engineering, social sciences, governance, and economics in managing and protecting water resources. It emphasises how shifts in water systems have profound implications for human health, biodiversity, economic development, and global security. This book highlights the urgent need to incorporate water education in primary and secondary schools to increase society's water and ocean literacy.

This book offers a comprehensive exploration of innovative research and emerging practices aimed at strengthening physics education in a rapidly changing world. Bringing together contributions from international experts, it examines how physics teaching and learning can evolve to meet the needs of diverse learners and contemporary societies. The volume highlights new approaches to engaging young learners, showcasing strategies that build curiosity, foster foundational understanding, and support early scientific thinking. At the university level, contributors discuss methods for developing deeper physics competencies, improving student retention, and aligning instruction with modern scientific and technological developments. Several chapters address how physics education must adapt to the challenges of today's world, including preparing students for a technologically driven society and integrating climate change education to foster informed, responsible global citizens. A dedicated section focuses on the professional learning of physics teachers, presenting research based models that support continuous growth, pedagogical innovation, and stronger teaching communities. By sharing perspectives, studies, and classroom experiences from around the globe, this book provides educators, researchers, and policymakers with valuable insights for improving physics education at all levels. It demonstrates how embracing change, pedagogical, technological, and societal, can lead to richer learning experiences and a more resilient, forward looking physics education system.
