This beautifully illustrated book takes readers inside Samuel and Gabrielle Lurie's dynamic private collection of contemporary British art, an intended gift to the Yale Center for British Art. Spanning the past four decades, the collection includes major works by Ian Stephenson, Patrick Caulfield, and John Walker, as well as important prints by Howard Hodgkin and R. B. Kitaj. At its core are 52 paintings and drawings by John Hoyland, widely considered one of Britain's foremost abstract painters. The Independent Eye features an interview with the Luries, as well as essays by leading critics and writers, some of whom were and are personally acquainted with the artists represented. These experts assess individual artists and works, explore their inspirations and methods, and define their shared experiences and values. They also address subjects such as the overall importance of the collection and postwar art in Britain.Distributed for the Yale Center for British ArtExhibition Schedule:Yale Center for British Art(09/16/10-01/02/11)

This book is a glorious celebration of Rhoda Pritzker’s collection of 20th-century British art, much of which has been donated to the Yale Center for British Art. Pritzker, who was born in Manchester in1914 and emigrated to the United States during the Blitz, was an avid and daring collector of paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Keen to support artists whose reputations were still emerging, and loyal to no single school or style, she developed a unique and impressively diverse collection. While Pritzker most actively purchased pieces in the 1950s and 1960s, her collection offers a fascinating window onto postwar artistic production. Beautifully illustrated, this catalogue features a number of unpublished works and archival materials. Among the artists discussed are key figures, including L. S. Lowry, Barbara Hepworth, Anthony Caro, and Henry Moore, as well as lesser-known artists. The texts elucidate the factors that made Pritzker’s method of collecting so singular—namely her relationship to an evolving transatlantic artistic community and the deeply personal nature of the works she procured.Published by the Yale Center for British Art/Distributed by Yale University Press Exhibition Schedule:Yale Center for British Art, New Haven(05/11/2016-08/21/2016)

The first comprehensive study of the most important ceramic innovation of the 19th centuryColorful, wildly imaginative, and technically innovative, majolica was functional and aesthetic ceramic ware. Its subject matter reflects a range of 19th-century preoccupations, from botany and zoology to popular humor and the macabre. Majolica Mania examines the medium’s considerable impact, from wares used in domestic settings to monumental pieces at the World’s Fairs. Essays by international experts address the extensive output of the originators and manufacturers in England—including Minton, Wedgwood, and George Jones—and the migration of English craftsmen to the U.S. New research including information on important American makers in New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia is also featured. Fully illustrated, the book is enlivened by new photography of pieces from major museums and private collections in the U.S. and Great Britain.Distributed for Bard Graduate CenterExhibition Schedule:Bard Graduate Center Gallery, New York(September 24, 2021–January 2, 2022)Walters Art Museum, Baltimore(February 26–July 31, 2022)Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent(October 15, 2022–February 26, 2023)

Betty Cooke has been called variously 'an icon within the tradition of modernist jewellery', and 'a seminal figure in American Modernist studio jewellery'. Her pieces have been shown nationally and internationally and are included in a number of museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and Museum of Arts & Design (MAD) in New York. She is regarded as an important role model for other artists and craftspeople. Her jewellery style is influenced by Bauhaus and modernism, very simple and pure, both geometric and minimalist; although given her early aspirations to become a sculptor, it is not be surprising that she thinks of her jewelry as "sculpture in motion". Her pieces have been sold through museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and contemporary designers such as Keegs in Seattle. Cooke has designed jewelry for Kirk Stieff and for Geoffrey Beene's shows in New York and Milan. Fred Lazarus, former director of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where Cooke trained and taught for many years, has said of Cooke's work, 'There is an enduring timelessness about her work, and today, as she did 50 years ago, she continues to create work that is extraordinary in its clean, spare architectural line and stunning simplicity.' The volume features 160 pieces by Cooke, a fully-illustrated checklist, illustrated essay, "Reflections" by leading patrons and collectors of Cooke's jewellery, illustrated time-line, a selected bibliography, and exhibition history & list of collections containing pieces by Betty Cooke.
