This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of six workshops, EvoWorkshops 2003, held together with EuroGP 2003 in Essex, UK in April 2003.The 63 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 109 submissions. In accordance with the six workshops covered , the papers are organized in topical sections on bioinformatics, combinatorial optimization, image analysis and signal processing, evolutionary music and art, evolutionary robotics, and scheduling and timetabling.

Evolutionary Computation (EC) deals with problem solving, optimization, and machine learning techniques inspired by principles of natural evolution and - netics. Just from this basic de?nition, it is clear that one of the main features of theresearchcommunityinvolvedinthestudyofitstheoryandinitsapplications is multidisciplinarity. For this reason, EC has been able to draw the attention of an ever-increasing number of researchers and practitioners in several ?elds. In its 6-year-long activity, EvoNet, the European Network of Excellence in Evolutionary Computing, has been the natural reference and incubator for that multifaceted community. EvoNet has provided logistic and material support for thosewhowerealreadyinvolvedinECbut,inthe?rstplace,ithashadacritical role in favoring the signi?cant growth of the EC community and its interactions with longer-established ones. The main instrument that has made this possible has been the series of events, ?rst organized in 1998, that have spanned over both theoretical and practical aspects of EC. Ever since 1999, the present format, in which the EvoWorkshops, a collection of workshops on the most application-oriented aspects of EC, act as satellites of a core event, has proven to be very successful and very representative of the multi-disciplinarity of EC. Up to 2003, the core was represented by EuroGP, the main European event dedicated to Genetic Programming. EuroGP has been joined as the main event in 2004 by EvoCOP, formerly part of EvoWorkshops, which has become the European Conference on Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimization.

Coverage brings together experts in computer science with experts in bioinformatics and the biological sciences. It presents contributions on fundamental and theoretical issues along with papers dealing with different applications areas.

The ?eld of bioinformatics has two main objectives: the creation and main- nance of biological databases, and the discovery of knowledge from life sciences data in order to unravel the mysteries of biological function, leading to new drugs and therapies for human disease. Life sciences data come in the form of biological sequences, structures, pathways, or literature. One major aspect of discovering biological knowledge is to search, predict, or model speci?c infor- tioninagivendatasetinordertogeneratenewinterestingknowledge.Computer science methods such as evolutionary computation, machine learning, and data mining all have a great deal to o?er the ?eld of bioinformatics. The goal of the 6th EuropeanConference on EvolutionaryComputation, Machine Learning, andDataMininginBioinformatics(EvoBIO2008)wastobringtogetherexperts from these ?elds in order to discuss new and novelmethods for tackling complex biological problems. The 6th EvoBIO conference was held in Naples, Italy on March 26-28, 2008 at the "Centro Congressi di Ateneo Federico II".EvoBIO 2008 was held jointly with the 11th European Conference on Genetic Programming (EuroGP 2008), the 8th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimisation (EvoCOP 2008), and the Evo Workshops. Collectively, the conf- ences and workshops were organized under the name Evo* (www.evostar.org).

The ?eld of bioinformatics has two main objectives: the creation and main- nance of biological databases and the analysis of life sciences data in order to unravel the mysteries of biological function. Computer science methods such as patternrecognition,machinelearning,anddatamining haveagreatdealtoo?er the ?eld of bioinformatics. The Pattern Recognition in Bioinformatics (PRIB) meeting was established in 2006 under the auspices of the International Asso- ation of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) to create a focus for the application and development of computer science methods to life science data. The 5th PRIB conference was held in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, on 22-24 September 2010. A total of 46 papers were submitted to the conference for peer review. Of those, 38 (83%) were accepted for publication in these proceedings.
