An original, innovative, and timely study on the cultural history of Cyprus under British rule, offering a new interpretative framework for studying the island’s colonial past. The book focuses on the often-overlooked cultural dimensions of the island’s colonial experience and demonstrates the crucial role culture played in shaping its historical trajectory and future. This is the first volume to explore various aspects of the island’s cultural life from 1878, when it transitioned from Ottoman to British rule, until the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960. It features a series of thematic chapters by female authors, focusing on photography, architecture, literature, theatre, art and collecting, cultural policy, advertising, fashion, antiquities and archaeology, public gardens, and sports clubs. Individual chapters bring to light previously unpublished source material in Greek and English, both written and visual, from state and private archives. Using cross-disciplinary analytical tools from fields such as imperial and colonial history, politics, cultural studies, and media and communication studies, the authors provide new insights.

In 1955, the Greek Cypriot organisation EOKA started an anti-colonial struggle against the British aiming at the unification of the island with Greece. This book sheds new light on the historical period of the struggle through the examination of various external and internal aspects of the conflict. It explores the role of international actors like the USA, the USSR, Germany, Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom and grapples with the complex domestic dynamics from a variety of perspectives. The EOKA Period in Cyprus analyses the role of armed organisations from both communities, as well as their respective responses to developments at various stages during the evolution of the conflict. By looking at processes such as radicalisation, passive resistance, collective punishment, intercommunal division and disarmament, the volume effectively considers the political, social and military nuances of the struggle, offering new insights from a multidisciplinary perspective in the process.

As a major tourist destination and the most eastern member of the European Union, housing two British Sovereign Bases and sitting at the intersection of three continents, Cyprus attracts international attention in more ways than one; hence the complex web of converging and conflicting outside interests that has marked and scarred the country’s history. Since 2009, when the previous edition appeared, further big changes have occurred with the United Nations-led efforts to bring about a settlement to the Cyprus problem as well as the latest on the exploration of hydrocarbon in the eastern Mediterranean seabed.Historical Dictionary of Cyprus, Second Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has several hundred cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, architecture, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Cyprus.
