This book is the third official archival publication devoted to RoboCup and documents the achievements presented at the Third Robot World Cup Soccer Games and Conferences, Robo-Cup-99, held in Stockholm, Sweden in July/August 1999. The book presents the following parts- Introductory overview and survey- Research papers of the champion teams and scientific award winners- Technical papers presented at the RoboCup-99 Workshop- Team description of a large number of participating teams. This book is mandatory reading for the rapidly growing RoboCup community as well as a valuable source or reference and inspiration for R&D professionals interested in multi-agent systems, distributed artificial intelligence, and intelligent robotics.

The present volume of Springer's \Lecture Notes in Arti cial Intelligence" - cuses on the challenge of balancing between the two extremes of pure reactivity and in-depth social deliberation in the context of multi-agent systems. Finding a balance between these two extremes will lead to an overall behavior of the individual agents and of the multi-agent system that meets the demands of the environment but also the demand for high-quality problem solving results. This book collects selected and revised papers from \Balancing Reactivity and Social Deliberation in Multi-Agent Systems"{aworkshop held at the 14th European Conference on Arti cial Intelligence (ECAI 2000) { and additional papers from renowned researchers in the eld. All the papers contained in this book have undergone at least one complete phase of reviewing and correction with ty- cally three reviews, the large majority of them have been through two phases. In the rst phase, papers were reviewed by members of the advisory committee, in the second phase, papers were peer-reviewed among the authors with additional comments from members of the advisory committee.Although several contributions to this book stem from members of the - boCup community and as such also deal with related topics, this is not a book on RoboCup.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Simulation, Modeling, and Programming for Autonomous Robots, SIMPAR 2008, held in Venice, Italy, in November 2008. The 29 revised full papers and 21 revised poster papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 42 submissions. The papers address all current issues of robotics applications and simulation environments thereof, such as 3D robot simulation, reliability, scalability and validation of robot simulation, simulated sensors and actuators, offline simulation of robot design, online simulation with realtime constraints, simulation with software/hardware-in-the-loop, middleware for robotics, modeling framework for robots and environments, testing and validation of robot control software, standardization for robotic services, communication infrastructures in distributed robotics, interaction between sensor networks and robots, human robot interaction, and multirobot. The papers are organized in topical sections on simulation, programming, and applications.
