This catalog accompanies Edi Hila: Painter of Transformation, the first retrospective exhibition devoted to the Albanian painter Edi Hila, considered one of the last masters from Eastern Europe. Through Hila’s eyes, the Eastern European experience is stripped of accident or adventure and instead gives weight to distilled general truths.The catalog traces key moments from his formative artistic experience, including a firsthand account of his infamous 1972 painting, Planting of Trees, which because of its unusual use of color and form that ran contrary to approved socialist realist doctrine, led to his being forced to labor in a poultry processing plant. In the evenings, however, he secretly created a series of drawings documenting the life of the workers, which became the Poultry series, harrowing in its raw realism. The publication continues to track Hila’s practice through the 1990s, when we find the artist carefully observing life after the fall of Enver Hoxha’s regime and his attempts at depicting the realities of the Albanian transformation on the precipice of the new millennium, before concluding with a review of Hila’s contemporaneous practice, which discloses more the limitations and traps of transformation than its promises. Richly illustrated with reproductions of Hila’s work in full color, many of them never before published, this is a groundbreaking catalog, one that will help establish Hila’s international reputation as a master painter of the region and Europe at large.

“I am sometimes asked ‘What is your objective’ and this I cannot truthfully answer. I work ‘from’ something rather than ‘towards’ something. It is a process of discovery.” Since 1961, Riley has focused exclusively on seemingly simple geometric forms, such as lines, circles, curves, and squares, arrayed across a surface—whether a canvas, wall, or paper—according to an internal logic. The resulting compositions actively engage the viewer, at times triggering sensations of vibration and movement. In the present selection, Riley advances her Measure by Measure series, her most extensive body of work to date, into a new, darker color palette. Once again, changing the way we look and offering a powerful effect on our eyes.This sense of dynamism was explored to great effect in the artist’s earliest black-and-white paintings, which established the basis of her enduring formal vocabulary. In 2020, after visiting her own earlier works at her retrospective exhibition organized by the National Galleries of Scotland, Riley returned to black-and-white lozenges, adjusting the orientation of each shape to create a new visual sensation. In 1967, Riley introduced colour into her work, thus expanding the perceptual and optical possibilities of her compositions.Published on the occasion of the 2021 exhibition at David Zwirner, London, this monograph features new scholarship on the artist by art historian Éric de Chassey, who looks at how Riley’s past, as well as previous artists, has led to this body of work.

For over thirty years, celebrated painter Callum Innes (b. 1962, Scotland) has created his lushly painted and subtly nuanced abstractions in a rectilinear format. In 2022, he added a striking new element to his repertoire: the tondo. To do so required mastering an entirely new set of technical and aesthetic challenges, confronting a form with abundant, historical resonances. This striking volume, richly illustrated with carefully selected images of Innes’s Tondos, and installation views of key exhibitions, explores how Innes has challenged traditional perceptions of shape and form to create dynamic and immersive visual experiences. A pivotal essay by art historian Éric de Chassey traces the artist’s encounters with this form and its progenitors in the history of art, firmly cementing Innes’s breakthrough in the pantheon of significant works rendered in this distinctive formation.Callum Innes was born in Edinburgh in 1962\. He lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Oslo, Norway. He studied drawing and painting at Gray’s School of Art from 1980–84 and completed a post-graduate degree at Edinburgh College of Art in 1985\. In 1992, Innes had major exhibitions at the ICA London, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. In 1995, he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize and was awarded the NatWest Prize in 1998 and the Jerwood Prize for Painting in 2002\. His critically acclaimed museum exhibition, From Memory, travelled throughout Europe and Australia from 2006–08\. In 2012, Innes was commissioned by the Edinburgh Arts Festival to transform the Scottish capital’s Regent Bridge with a changing sequence of coloured light, and in 2016, he was the subject of a major retrospective survey exhibition and accompanying monograph, I’ll Close My Eyes, at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg, the Netherlands. In 2018, his first major solo exhibition in France, In Position, took place at Chateau la Coste in Provence, with an accompanying publication. Innes debuted his new series of Tondo paintings at Sean Kelly Gallery, New York, in 2022; this was followed by exhibitions of the Tondo series at Frith Street Gallery, London; Parra & Romero, Ibiza; Galerie Tschudi, Zurich; and Kerlin Gallery, Dublin in 2023\. He will have exhibitions at Sean Kelly, Los Angeles, and Kode – Lysverket Museum, Bergen, Norway, in 2024.

A rebel and feminist, the Switzerland-born Miriam Cahn is one of the major artists of her generation. The catalog of the first international monographic exhibition on Maria Jarema, curated by Éric de Chassey and Natalia Sielewicz, in the new premises of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.This exhibition will introduce international audiences to the avant-garde and multifaceted work of Maria Jarema (1908–1958), one of the most important figures of the interwar and postwar avant-garde in Eastern Europe. Jarema was a painter, sculptor, art writer, cofounder of the Krakow Group and the Cricot Theatre, and creator of theater sets, costumes, puppets, dolls, monumental designs, and book covers. She is one of the most important Polish artists of the twentieth century, a conscious participant in the European avant-garde, and a pioneer of emancipation. Her singular blending of abstraction and figuration, subjectivity and collective experiences, and embodiment and dismemberment calls for a new discussion. It also raises the question of how the achievements of women artists from Eastern Europe, who fought not only for the autonomy of art but also for its social commitment, can be brought back into the public sphere.
