Since 1970, interest has increased significantly in the representation and manipulation of imprecision and uncertainty. Perhaps the most important technique in this area concerns fuzzy logic or the logic of fuzziness initiated by L.A. Zadeh in 1965. Since then, fuzzy logic has been incorporated into many areas of fundamental science and into the applied sciences. More importantly, it has been successful in the areas of expert systems and fuzzy control. The main body of this book consists of so-called IF-THEN rules, on which experts express their knowledge with respect to a certain domain of expertise. This work gives special attention to fuzzy IF-THEN rules as they are being applied in computational intelligence. The ongoing increase in scale of integration of electronics makes storage and computational power affordable to many applications. Also image process ing systems can benefit from this trend. A variety of algorithms for image processing tasks becomes close at hand. From the whole range of possible approaches, those based on fuzzy logic are the ones this book focusses on. A particular useful property of fuzzy logic techniques is their ability to represent knowledge in a way which is comprehensible to human interpretation. The theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic was initiated in 1965 by Zadeh, and is one of the most developed models to treat imprecision and uncertainty. Instead of the classical approach that an object belongs or does not belong to a set, the concept of a fuzzy set allows a gradual transition from mem bership to nonmembership, providing partial degrees of membership. Fuzzy techniques are often complementary to existing techniques and can contribute to the development of better and more robust methods, as has already been illustrated in numerous scientific branches. The present book resulted from the workshop "Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing" which was organized at the 10th FUZZ-IEEE Conference in Mel bourne, Australia. At this event several speakers have given an overview of the current state-of-the-art of fuzzy filters for image processing. Afterwards, the book has been completed with contributions of other international re searchers.

In order to properly characterize the content of this book, it is important to clarify ?rst the intended meaning of its title Fuzzy Logic. This clari?cation is needed since the term “fuzzy logic,” as currently used in the literature, is viewed either in a narrow sense or in a broad sense. In the narrow sense, fuzzy logic is viewed as an area devoted to the formal development, in a u- ?ed way, of the various logical systems of many-valued logic. It is concerned withformalizingsyntactic aspects(basedonthenotionofproof)andsemantic aspects (based on the notion oftruth) of the variouslogical calculi. In order to be acceptable, each of these logical calculi must be sound (provability implies truth) and complete (truth implies provability). The most representativep- lication of fuzzy logic in this sense is, in my opinion, the classic book by Peter Hajek [1]. When the term “fuzzy logic” is viewed in the broad sense, it refers to an extensive agenda whose primary aim is to utilize the apparatus of fuzzy set theoryfordevelopingsoundconcepts,principles,andmethodsforrepresenting and dealing with knowledge expressed by statements in natural language. Although workin fuzzy logicin the broadsense is not directly concernedwith the issues that are investigated under fuzzy logic in the narrow sense, the importance of the latter is that it provides the former with solid theoretical foundations. After examining the content of this book, it is easy to conclude that its title,FuzzyLogic, referstofuzzylogicinthebroadsense. Thisisconsistent,by and large, with the usual meaning of the term “fuzzy logic” in the literature.

FLINS, an acronym originally for Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in Nuclear Science, was inaugurated by Prof. Da Ruan of the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK·CEN) in 1994 with the purpose of providing PhD and Postdoc researchers with a platform to present their research ideas in fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence. For more than 28 years, FLINS has been expanded to include research in both theoretical and practical development of computational intelligent systems.With this successful conference series: FLINS1994 and FLINS1996 in Mol, FLINS1998 in Antwerp, FLINS2000 in Bruges, FLINS2002 in Gent, FLINS2004 in Blankenberge, FLINS2006 in Genova, FLINS2008 in Marid, FLINS2010 in Chengdu, FLINS2012 in Istanbul, FLINS2014 in Juan Pesoa, FLINS2016 in Roubaix, FLINS2018 in Belfast and FLINS2020 in Cologne, FLINS2022 was organized by Nankai University, and co-organized by Southwest Jiaotong University, University of Technology Sydney and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries Textiles of University of Lille. This unique international research collaboration has provided researchers with a platform to share and exchange ideas on state-of-art development in machine learning, multi agent and cyber physical systems.Following the wishes of Prof. Da Ruan, FLINS2022 offered an international platform that brought together mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers who are actively involved in machine learning, intelligent systems, data analysis, knowledge engineering and their applications, to share their latest innovations and developments, exchange notes on the state-of-the-art research ideas, especially in the areas of industrial microgrids, intelligent wearable systems, sustainable development, logistics, supply chain and production optimization, evaluation systems and performance analysis, as well as risk and security management, that have now become part and parcel of Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in Nuclear Science.This FLINS2022 Proceedings has selected 78 conference papers that cover the following seven areas of interests:

FLINS and ISKE are two well-established international conferences, both launched by Da Ruan (1960-2011), that share a common objective: to link the theoretical foundations of computational intelligence with its applications to complex engineering and multidisciplinary decision making problems, by putting together research institutions and industries, covering all the fields related to uncertainty management, operational research and artificial intelligence, including observation and experimentation, information processing, unavoidable ethical considerations and future trends in artificial neural networks, classification, clustering, computing with words, decision-making, evolutionary/genetic algorithms, expert systems, feature extraction, fuzzy systems, geographic information systems, intelligent systems, machine learning, optimization, soft computing, and applications related to these topics as water, energy and environmental management, among others.FLINS is the acronym introduced in 1994 standing for Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Technologies in Nuclear Science; and ISKE is the acronym for Intelligent Systems and Knowledge Engineering, launched in 2006. Every two years both conferences are organized jointly. This is the Proceedings of FLINS-ISKE 2024, held in Madrid (Spain), in July 16-21 2024.
