This innovative book identifies the key elements of good management and practice common to all residential child care settings - whether hospital unit, boarding school, children's home, special school or custodial care establishment - and important variations between the different settings. Using a model developed under the auspices of the Rowntree Foundation, it provides managers with a coherent framework for understanding the different facets of their role and the outcomes they are aiming to achieve. Major components of the model are:· the environment· the legal framework· developmental issues· time-related issues. In each case the salient factors for practice and management are identified and discussed. Good Practice Education and Residential Care of Children offers a model which can be readily applied to training, assessment of standards, inspections, and research and development. Based on the latest research and reflecting the national drive towards evidence-based standards, it will be an invaluable support to managers in training and practice.

Originally published in 1992, this book dispels some of the myths that surround water resource problems of arid lands and the notion that there are simple ‘once and for all’ solutions. Population growth, industrialization, environmental mismanagement and land degradation have led to droughts, poverty and famine with the result that the need for space, food and key natural resources such as water has become the most critical issue in global development. Nowhere is this crisis more apparent than in arid lands, where water resources provide the key to economic and environmental development. The authors argue that as the arid land environment is highly variable the key to success is flexibility. The book is divided into four sections, dealing with the geography of the arid realm; the water resource problems they face: the methods available for enhancing water supplies and finally, management of this resource. The book will be of use to undergraduate and postgraduate student and for those actively engaged in the development of arid land water resources.

Originally published in 1994, In Loco Parentis provides a basic framework for training staff in boarding and residential education and care establishments for children and young people. It addresses the needs of all involved with providing care in such contexts, whether academic, pastoral or domestic, though its main focus is on the training of teachers and care professionals. Its topicality arose from the growing realisation that the boarding environment creates specific training needs which had – for the most part – been met informally, if at all, in the past. The Holbrook Group comprised practitioners involved in research and training across the entire field of boarding and residential education and care.
