This book contains selected papers presented at the 17th IFIP WG 9.2, 9.6/11.7, 11.6/SIG 9.2.2 International Summer School on Privacy and Identity Management, held online in August/September 2022.

The 9 full papers and 5 workshop and tutorial papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 23 submissions. As in previous years, one of the goals of the IFIP Summer School was to encourage the publication of thorough research papers by students and emerging scholars. The papers combine interdisciplinary approaches to bring together a host of perspectives, such as technical, legal, regulatory, socio-economic, social or societal, political, ethical, anthropological, philosophical, or psychological perspectives.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 19th IFIP WG 9.6/11.7 and IFIP WG 11.6 International Summer School on Privacy and Identity Management, Privacy and Identity 2024, held in Madrid, Spain, during September 10–13, 2024.

The 9 full papers presented in these book were carefully reviewed and selected from 11 submissions. The proceedings also contain one keynote paper in full paper length. The  papers have been organized in the following topical sections: Keynote; different perspectives on Generative AI; and contemporary challenges and possibilities for privacy and ID management.

This book advances an approach that combines the individual and the structural, systemic dimensions of data protection. It considers the right to data protection under the EU Charter and its relationship to the secondary legislation. Furthermore, the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU as well as current academic conceptualizations are analysed.

The author finds that current approaches invariably link data protection to privacy and often fail to address the structural implications of data processing. He therefore suggests a dualistic approach to data protection: in its individual dimension, data protection aims to protect natural persons and their rights, while the structural dimension protects the democratic society as a whole from the adverse effects of data processing. Using this approach, the full potential of an independent right to data protection can be realized.
