The Titles of Jesus in Christology was recognised as a major contribution to Christological study when it was first published in German in 1963. Its translation into English a few years later cemented this status. Hahn undertakes a massive and detailed examination of the various traditions that led to the use of names for Jesus that we now recognise as characteristic of the very early Church. Moreover, he carefully distinguishes between the different Christological conceptions present in these differing branches of primitive Christianity, and embodied in the terms they produced. His analysis and categories have been followed by many later scholars, who built on his detailed study of the peculiarities of the different titles given to Jesus by the different communities that followed him.

Ferdinand Hahn bietet mit diesem Lehrbuch eine Gesamtübersicht über das Neue Testament. Der erste Band beginnt mit einer Darstellung der Vielfalt des urchristlichen Zeugnisses in Gestalt einer Theologiegeschichte des Urchristentums. Hier stellt der Autor die Frage nach der theologischen Relevanz der Botschaft Jesu und behandelt die Verkündigung der aramäisch und der griechisch sprechenden Gemeinden. Er geht auf die paulinische und deuteropaulinische Theologie und die außerpaulinischen Schriften des hellenistischen Judenchristentums ebenso ein wie auf die synoptischen Evangelien samt Apostelgeschichte und die johanneische Theologie. Abgeschlossen wird Band I mit einem Ausblick auf die Übergangszeit zur Alten Kirche. Im zweiten Band folgt eine ausführliche Erörterung der Einheit des neutestamentlichen Zeugnisses anhand von Einzelthemen. In fünf Teilen bespricht Ferdinand Hahn das Alte Testament als Bibel des Urchristentums, die Offenbarung Gottes in Jesus Christus, und danach die soteriologische, die ekklesiologische und die eschatologische Dimension des Offenbarungsgeschehens. So wird in Verbindung mit der Einzelinterpretation die fundamentaltheologische Aufgabe der neutestamentlichen Exegese herausgearbeitet. Ziel des Werkes ist es, die Leser möglichst nahe an den neutestamentlichen Text und dessen Probleme heranzuführen.
