This innovative volume investigates the meaning of ‘something’ in different recent philosophical traditions in order to rethink the logic and the unity of ontology, without forgetting to compare these views to earlier significative accounts in the history of philosophy. In fact, the revival of interest in “something” in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as in contemporary philosophy can easily be accounted for: it affords the possibility for asking the question: what is there? without engaging in predefined speculative assumptions The issue about “something” seems to avoid any naive approach to the question about what there is, so that it is treated in two main contemporary philosophical trends: “material ontology”, which aims at taking “inventory” of what there is, of everything that is; and “formal ontology”, which analyses the structural features of all there is, whatever it is. The volume advances cutting-edge debates on what is the first et the most general item in ontology, that is to say “something”, because the relevant features of the conceptual core of something are: non-nothingness, otherness. Something means that one being is different from others. The relationality belongs to something.: Therefore, the volume advances cutting-edge debates in phenomenology, analytic philosophy, formal and material ontology, traditional metaphysics.

We tend to think of imagination as private, originating from our innermost selves and language as something that is created in communication. Turning this idea on its head, the contributors to Dialogical Imaginations start from the provocative premise that imagination and language are both inherently social constructs that determine how we perceive the world. While philosophy even up until Newton described scientific effort, in the Early Modern Age philology was understood in very different ways: as universal knowledge of all that is conveyed by language, but also as technical analysis of written documents or as collection of knowledge in the form of an encyclopedia. This book attempts to illuminate the different aspects in more detail. In order to understand the significance and consequences of the “philologization” of our cultural history, one should first focus on the intellectual gesture of which philology bears witness, such as the development of “critical activity”.

Lange als rein rezipierende und damit zu vernachlässigende Vertreter der antiken Philosophie angesehen, werden die philosophischen Werke von Römern inzwischen als ernstzunehmende Stimmen der von ihnen gepflegten hellenistischen Lehren wahrgenommen. Aus kultur- und bildungsgeschichtlicher Perspektive wird zudem vermehrt nach den Eigenheiten philosophischer Betätigung in Rom gefragt. Prägt diese Fragestellung inzwischen auch die Auseinandersetzung mit den einzelnen Autoren, sind Initiativen weiterhin rar, die solche autor- und werkbezogene Ansätze vergleichend aufeinander beziehen und zu einem Gesamtbild der Philosophie in Rom zusammenführen. Ausgehend von dem inzwischen akzeptierten Befund, dass die aus Griechenland importierte Philosophie in Rom signifikante Veränderungen und Weiterentwicklungen erfahren hat, nähert sich der Sammelband den zentralen römischen Autoren und Trägergruppen in komparatistischer Perspektive und fragt danach, welche Konsequenzen die spezifischen kulturellen Verständnisbedingungen in Rom für deren Auseinandersetzung mit der Philosophie hatten. Auf diese Weise entwirft er philosophie- und kulturgeschichtliche Kriterien, die die philosophischen Bemühungen von Römern als dezidiert römisch erkennbar machen.
