The concept of "literature" is notoriously vague and defies definition, yet at the same time it is indispensable in an age where traditional subject boundaries are breaking down. This volume discusses possible ways of defining the concept in such a manner that it can be productively deployed heuristically in varied historical and cultural contexts. At the same time, phenomena such as fictionality and literaricity are taken as the starting point for a search for common features of literature. The following topics are dealt with: 1. Aspects of ''Literature'' as a prototype, 2. Fictionality, 3. Historical aspects of the phenomenon of ''Literature'', 4. Cultural and social aspects of the phenomenon of ''Literature'', 5. The constitution of literature as an object in literary studies.

Although fictional characters have long dominated the reception of literature, films, television programs, comics, and other media products, only recently have they begun to attract their due attention in literary and media theory. The book systematically surveys today´s diverse and at times conflicting theoretical perspectives on fictional character, spanning research on topics such as the differences between fictional characters and real persons, the ontological status of characters, the strategies of their representation and characterization, the psychology of their reception, as well as their specific forms and constellations in - and across - different media, from the book to the internet.

Die neuere Forschung ist sich darüber einig, daß zwischen der Wichtigkeit des Bildungsbegriffs in den letzten 200 Jahren und seinem vagen semantischen Gehalt ein (scheinbares) Mißverhältnis besteht. Für die angemessene historische Analyse dieses und ähnlicher Begriffe wird Begriffsgeschichte eingestellt in einen theoretischen Rahmen, der Begriffe einem evolutionstheoretisch basierten Beschreibungszugriff zugänglich macht. Dabei kann auf Kategorien der historischen Soziologie Luhmanns und der Begriffsgeschichte Kosellecks zurückgegriffen werden. Das Korrelations-Dreieck, in dem ein Begriff historisch situiert ist, bildet sich aus: 1. seiner Bedingtheit durch die Gesellschaftsstruktur, d.h. seinen Funktionen und Problemreferenzen, 2. seinem Zusammenhang mit früheren Konzepten, 3. seiner Vernetzung mit anderen zeitgenössischen Begriffen. Für die Analyse dieser dritten Dimension wird ein Verfahren angewandt, das der Verfasser als Komponentenanalyse bezeichnet.

Als Komponenten des Bildungsbegriffs erweisen sich neben dem Individualitätskonzept einige Begriffe, die sich unter der Perspektive der Verzeitlichung analysieren lassen: genetisches Denken, Teleologie, Zeitökonomie. Die Begriffsanalyse macht auch die zahlreichen Funktionen von ''Bildung'' sichtbar: soziale Integration und Distinktion, Selbstverständigung, Erklärungsmuster und Handlungsorientierung. Das Bildungskonzept der Goethezeit erweist sich als produktive Reaktion auf die Probleme, die durch die Umstellung von der stratifikatorischen auf die funktionale Differenzierung entstanden sind. So wird dieser Begriff bis ins 20. Jahrhundert durch seine Flexibilität und vielseitige Verwendbarkeit ein wesentlicher Faktor in der Koevolution von Semantik und Gesellschaftsstruktur.

Referenztext für die Begriffsanalyse ist Goethes Autobiographie "Dichtung und Wahrheit", die im 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts als exemplarische Darstellung eines Bildungsganges gewirkt hat. Die Leistungsfähigkeit des Verfahrens zeigt sich auch daran, daß für das ausgiebig behandelte Thema ''Goethe und die Bildung'' neue Einsichten erbracht werden. Detailliert analysiert werden der Titel und die damit bezeichnete Wahrheitsauffassung der Autobiographie sowie Goethes Darstellung seiner religiösen Entwicklung. Es wird gezeigt, daß dieses Werk nicht nur inhaltlich, sondern auch in seinen narrativen Strategien bis ins Detail dem Bildungskonzept vielfach verpflichtet ist.
