This book throws new light on the drivers of migration and explores the different ways in which aspiration and desire are involved in the generation, experiences, and outcomes of migration. The authors propose novel approaches to advancing collective understanding of migration, including reassessments of classical push and pull theory; explorations of the lexicon of aspiration, desire and voluntariness in migration; and reflections on the relationships between migration and modernity, youth and expectation, and anti-immigrant discourses. The chapters have a broad geographical scope, spanning migration on different continents and in diverse socio-economic and cultural settings. At a time when migration has become one of the most prominent areas of national and international political debate, this volume provides the tools for researchers to reconsider how we understand the forces and outcomes of global mobility. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

How can migration studies respond to the decolonial challenge? International and interdisciplinary, this timely book directly confronts issues of ongoing colonialism and a re-evaluation of migration studies’ epistemic, institutional and intellectual foundations. The book proposes postcolonial frameworks for conceptualising and researching migration while considering the scope and potential for decolonisation of the field.Contributors highlight the deep and enduring links between migration studies and colonialism, confronting the spectres of enslavement, Indigenous dispossession and worldwide indenture. They address the field’s relationship with borders and governance, outlining critical issues such as power dynamics, the concept of othering and territoriality, alongside a nuanced examination of the notions of the migrant and the refugee. The book ultimately emphasises the transformative influence of emerging critical and radical traditions within contemporary migration studies. This is a valuable resource for scholars and students of migration studies across the social sciences and addresses the state of the field in a time of intellectual decolonisation.

Providing a critical overview of transnationalism as a concept, this Handbook looks at its growing influence in an era of high-speed, globalised interconnectivity. It offers crucial insights on how approaches to transnationalism have altered how we think about social life from the family to the nation-state, whilst also challenging the predominance of methodologically nationalist analyses. Encompassing research from around the world, leading international researchers examine transnational migration, culture, state practices, organisations and institutions. Chapters draw attention to conceptual concerns around the topic, including the spatiality and temporality of transnationalism, connections to the life course, and the articulation of affect and emotion across borders. The Handbook further explains the transnational dimensions of different forms of migration, including labour migrations and student mobilities, and emphasises why and how transnational networks and circulations matter. An engaging foundation for students and scholars seeking to enhance their understanding of transnationalism, this Handbook offers agenda-setting arguments that will be beneficial to researchers of migration and mobilities, human geography, sociology, anthropology, international relations and cultural studies. It will also be an interesting read for practitioners working in migration, migrant rights and transnational organising and activism.

Since 1980, the peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand have fundamentally changed through new policies and new patterns of migration - from a largely Pakeha population with 10 per cent Maori in 1980 to today's megadiversity, with new residents from Asia, the Pacific and the rest of the world. Immigration has had a profound impact on New Zealand's society, economy, and place in the world.Edges of Empire is an in-depth account of the social, political and economic context within which these transformations in policy and population took place. Drawing on interviews with fifteen former Ministers of Immigration, this book reveals the intricacies of politics and policy-making that have led to New Zealand's relatively open and economically driven approach towards migration.Written by three leading social scientists, Edges of Empire provides an insightful account of who is included in Aotearoa New Zealand and under what conditions.
