Since 1999, PROFES has established itself as one of the recognized international process improvement conferences. In 2004 the conference left Europe for the first time and moved to Japan. Japan and its neighboring countries are intensifying their efforts to improve software engineering excellence, so it was a logical step to select Japan as the venue for PROFES 2004. The purpose of the conference is to bring to light the most recent findings and results in the area and to stimulate discussion between researchers, experienced professionals, and technology providers. The large number of participants coming from industry confirms that the conference provides a variety of up-to-date topics and tackles industry problems. The main theme of PROFES is professional software process improvement (SPI) motivated by product and service quality needs. SPI is facilitated by software process assessment, software measurement, process modeling, and technology transfer. It has become a practical tool for quality software engineering and management. The conference addresses both the solutions found in practice and the relevant research results from academia. This is reflected in the 41 full papers, which are a balanced mix of academic papers as well as industrial experience reports.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed and revised post-conference documentation of the 11th International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, SEKE'99, held in Kaiserslautern, Germany in June 1999. The book provides a unique overview of current activities, approaches, and trends in learning software organizations. The first part gives an overview on the topic, covering foundations in the software engineering domain, enabling techniques for organizational learning, and learning support techniques. WiththetremendousgrowthofInternetandtelecommunicationapplications, it is ever more important to emphasize the quality in softwareproducts and p- cesses.With plenty of new people andnew software-basedapplications emerging at a very fast pace, it is easy to forget the importance of product and process improvement,and to repeat the same mistakesalreadymade in moretraditional software development.The PROFES conference has addressed this issue by - plicitly enhancing the conferencetopicstowardsInternetandtelecommunication applications. Another important addition is the Learning Software Organizations (LSO2000) workshop, which was organized in conjunction with PROFES 2000. TheLSOworkshopseriesisacommunicationforumthataddressesthe questions of organizational learning from a software point of view and builds upon exi- ing work on knowledge management and organizational learning. LSO comp- mented the PROFES program encouraging fruitful discussions and information exchange between the participants of PROFES 2000 and LSO 2000.

KI 2008 was the 31st Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence held September 23–26 at the University of Kaiserslautern and the German Research Center for Arti?cial Intelligence DFKI GmbH in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The conference series started in 1975 with the German Workshop on AI (GWAI), which took place in Bonn, and represents the ?rst forum of its type for the German AI Community. Over the years AI has become a major ?eld in c- puter scienceinGermanyinvolvinga numberof successfulprojects thatreceived much international attention. Today KI conferences are international forums where participants from academia and industry from all over the world meet to exchange their recent research results and to discuss trends in the ?eld. Since 1993 the meeting has been called the “Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence,” designated by the German acronym KI. This volume contains the papers selected out of 77 submissions, including a number of submissions from outside German-speaking countries. In total, 15 submissions (19%) were accepted for oral and 30 (39%) for poster presentation. Oralpresentationsattheconferenceweresingletrack. Becauseofthis,thechoice of presentation form (oral, poster) was based on how well reviews indicated that the paper would ?t into one or the other format. The proceedings allocate the same space to both types of papers. In addition, we selected six papers that show high application potential - scribing systems or prototypical implementations of innovative AI technologies. They are also included in this volume as two-page extended abstracts.
