The papers constitute the research proceedings of the 12th EuroSPI (European Software Process Improvement, www.eurospi.net) conference held in Budapest, 9-11 November 2005, Hungary. EuroSPI established an experience library (- brary.eurospi.net) which will be continuously extended over the next years and will be made available to all attendees. EuroSPI also created an umbrella init- tive for establishing a European Quali?cation Network in which di?erent SPINs and national initiatives join mutually bene?cial collaborations. From 2005, through EuroSPI partners and networks, in collaboration with the European Union (supported by the EU Leonardo da Vinci Programme), a certi?cation body will be created for the IT and services sector so as to o?er SPI knowledge and certi?cates to industry, establishing close knowledge transfer links between research and industry. The biggest value of EuroSPI lies in its function as a European knowledgeand experience exchangemechanism between SPI research institutions and industry.

We started at the outset of the new millennium, and we are still proving that agile pr- esses were neither a millennium bug nor a YAF (yet another fad). In its first editions, this conference was a get-together of a few pioneers who - bated about how to make agile processes and methods accepted by the mainstream researchers and practitioners in software engineering. Now agile approach to software development has been fully accepted by the software engineering community and this event has become the major forum for understanding better the implications of agility in software development and proposing extensions to the mainstream approaches. These two aspects were fully reflected in this year’s conference. They were - flected in the keynote speeches, which covered the background work done starting as early as the early eighties by Barry Boehm, definition of the field by Kent Beck, a successful industrial application in a success story by Sean Hanly, the perspective and the future of agile methods in large corporations by Jack Järkvik, and even some - sightful views from a philosopher, Pekka Himanen.

The Eight International Conference on Product-Focused Software Process Impro- ment (PROFES 2007) brought together researchers and industrial practitioners to report new research results and exchange experiences and findings in the area of process and product improvement. The focus of the conference is on understanding, learning, evaluating, and improving the relationships between process improvement activities (such as the deployment of innovative defect detection processes) and their effects in products (such as improved product reliability and safety). Consequently, major topics of the conference include the evaluation of existing software process improvement (SPI) approaches in different contexts, the presentation of new or mo- fied SPI approaches, and the relation between SPI and new development techniques or emerging application domains. This year’s conference theme focused on global software development. More and more products are being developed in distributed, global development environments with many customer–supplier relations in the value chain. Outsourcing, off-shoring, near-shoring, and even in-sourcing aggravate this trend further. Supporting such d- tributed development requires well-understood and accurately implemented devel- ment process interfaces, process synchronization, and an efficient process evolution mechanisms. Overcoming cultural barriers and implementing efficient communi- tion channels are some of the key challenges. It is clear that process improvement approaches also need to consider these new development contexts.

On behalf of the PROFES Organizing Committee we are proud to present the proce- th ings of the 10 International Conference on Product Focused Software Process - provement (PROFES 2009), held in Oulu, Finland. Since the first conference in 1999, the conference has established its place in the software engineering community as a respected conference that brings together participants from academia and industry. The roots of PROFES are in professional software process improvement motivated by product and service quality needs. The conference addresses both the solutions found in practice as well as relevant research results from academia. To ensure that PROFES retains its high quality and focus on the most relevant research issues, the conference has actively maintained close collaboration with industry and sub- quently widened its scope to the research areas of collaborative and agile software development. A special focus for 2009 was placed on software business to bridge research and practice in the economics of software engineering. On behalf of the PROFES Organizing Committee we are proud to present the proce- th ings of the 10 International Conference on Product Focused Software Process - provement (PROFES 2009), held in Oulu, Finland. Since the first conference in 1999, the conference has established its place in the software engineering community as a respected conference that brings together participants from academia and industry. The roots of PROFES are in professional software process improvement motivated by product and service quality needs. The conference addresses both the solutions found in practice as well as relevant research results from academia. To ensure that PROFES retains its high quality and focus on the most relevant research issues, the conference has actively maintained close collaboration with industry and sub- quently widened its scope to the research areas of collaborative and agile software development. A special focus for 2009 was placed on software business to bridge research and practice in the economics of software engineering. The LESS 2010 conference was the first scientific conference dedicated to advancing the “lean enterprise software and systems” body of knowledge. It fostered interactions by joining the lean product development community with the agile community coupled with innovative ideas nurtured by the beyond budgeting school of thinking. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Lean Software and Systems Consortium (LSSC). The conference is established as a conference series. The idea of the conference was to offer a unique platform for advancing the state of the art in research and practice by bringing the leading researchers and practitioners to the same table. Indeed, LESS 2010 attracted a unique mix of participants including academics, researchers, leading consultants and industry practitioners. The aim of the conference was to use this diverse community to advance research and practical knowledge concerning lean thinking within the field of software business and development. LESS 2010 had more than 60% of its speakers come from the industry and the remaining from academia. LESS is poised to grow as we advance into future iterations of the conference and become the conference for lean thinking in systems and software development. Its growth and credibility will be advanced by the communities and knowledge exchange platform it provides. LESS offers several avenues for knowledge exchange to create a highly collaborative environment. Each year, we aim to bring novelty to a program that fosters collaboration, letting new ideas thrive during and after the conference.
