This book provides a compendium of strategies for decolonizing global knowledge orders, research methodology and teaching in the social sciences. The volume presents recent work on epistemological critique informed by postcolonial thought, and outlines strategies for actively decolonizing social science methodology and learning/teaching environments that will be of great utility to IR and other academic fields that examine global order. The volume focuses on the decolonization of intellectual history in the social sciences, followed by contributions on social science methodology and lastly more practical suggestions for educational/didactical approaches in academic teaching. The book is not confined to the classical format of research articles but moves beyond such boundaries by bringing in spoken word and interviews with scholar-activists. Overall this volume enables researchers to practice a reflexive and situated knowledge production more suitable to confronting present-day global predicaments. The perspectives mobilise a constructive critique, but also allow for a reconstruction of methodologies and methods in ways that open up new lenses, new archives of knowledges and reconsider the who, the how and the what of the craft of social science research into global order.

IntroductionKate Chopin"e;s the Awakening and especially its ending has been interpreted primarily in two different ways: There are those who believe that the ending, Edna"e;s suicide, is Edna"e;s final awakening (among them inter alia Rosowski, cf. The Novel of Awakening. p.47) and there are those who argue that the ending is Edna"e;s final realization of her failure to find a place in society (for example Lattin, cf. Childbirth and Motherhood. p.44; Solomon cf. Characters as Foils to Edna. p.119). But beyond these contrasting angles of interpretation, there is one common belief: The Awakening is Edna"e;s struggle to find her own identity, her genuine place in society or, in short, herself:One of these days [ ] I"e;m going to pull myself together for a while and think ? try to determine what character of a woman I am; for, candidly, I don"e;t know. By all the codes which I am acquainted with, I am a devilishly wicked specimen of the sex. But some way I can"e;t convince myself that I am. I must think about it. (p.103)As the figures of Adele Ratignolle and Mlle. Reisz show, it is, after all, possible for women to find an identity of their own. Patricia Hopkins Lattin and Deborah E. Parker have argued that these two women serve as role models for Edna. But both Lattin and Parker fail to give a role model-based explanation of Edna"e;s failure to find her place in society. The question that shall be examined in the following is therefore the contribution of Edna"e;s role models to her failure. It shall be analyzed why Edna, unlike Adele and Mlle. Reisz, does not succeed in finding her place in society, and why she also does not succeed to model herself on Adele or Reisz. In order to answer this question, especially the differences between Edna and each of her role-models shall be examined. Since many research papers have argued that Adele Ratignolle and Mlle. Reisz serve as Edna`s role models, this view will not be verified in the following. First of all, Edna"e;s relationship with Adele and, afterwards, with Mlle. Reisz will be examined. It will be analyzed to what degree Edna imitates these role models. By doing so, the discrepancies between the characters of Edna and Adele Ratignolle and Edna and Mlle. Reisz will be presented, and it will be examined to what degree Edna would be able to lead the same life as her role models do. The last task will be to point out to what extend it is due to these role models that Edna fails to find her place in society.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: When Mary Shelley published her famous Frankenstein-novel in 1818, she hinted at a theme in the subtitle "e;The Modern Prometheus"e; that would run like a thread through all of her later novels. While much has been written about the Promethean element in Frankenstein - Dougherty focuses on the moral issues (Dougherty 111), Franklin reads the novel as a critique of the concepts of democracy in Prometheus and Frankenstein (Franklin 42), and Cantor focuses on identifying the Promethean figure - very little has been written on the element of fire in the novel. This lack of interest in the fire imagery in research is interesting, because fire plays a rather dominant role in both the Promethean Myth and the novel itself. After all, it is fire in the form of a spark of being that gives life to the monster. Although Watson rightly states that the Modern Prometheus concerns two legends of Prometheus that he stole fire from heaven, and that he made a man from clay and used fire to give it life (Watson 247), only Franklin grants the issue of fire more than just a few words. She then also fails to go into more detail after declaring that the monster is not given fire, but finds it himself (Franklin 42). Interestingly, unlike research, the film industry has spotted the importance of the fire imagery. It plays a dominant role in many adaptations of the novel recall James Whale s 1931 film version, where the villagers try to burn the monster in the windmill, or Kenneth Branagh s 1994 movie, where Frankenstein creates two monsters and the former Elizabeth commits suicide by setting herself on fire. The impact of the fire imagery in Shelley s work becomes even more apparent in looking at her other novels. The symbolic use of fire is not restricted to Frankenstein and the Promethean theme, but is a general stylistic feature distinct of Shelley s writing. In addition to Frankenstein, two other of Shelley s novels will be examined in order to prove this point. Dougherty argues that fire mainly serves the purpose of providing heat and light (Dougherty 18). The notion fire will thus not be restricted to the literal sense, but will also comprise light and warmth. The symbolism of the opposite forces darkness, cold, and water will also be considered.

In his article What is a Speech Act? Searle develops a "e;theory in the philosophy of a language, according to which speaking in a language is a matter of performing illocutionary acts with certain intentions, according to constitutive rules (Grewendorf / Meggle 2002: 4). The following paper will deal with the ideas on speech acts developed in Searle's article. First, a fundamental understanding of the assumptions Searle s theory is based on will be provided. There will be a brief introduction to the theories of J.L. Austin and H.P. Grice, whom Searle s article was mostly influenced by. Grice s Meaning and Austin s How to do things with words will constitute the reading mostly consulted. After providing a basis for Searle s theory, his article What is a Speech Act? will be looked at in detail. The examinations will include Searle s distinction between regulative rules and constitutive rules and his introduction of the notions proposition-indicating element and function-indicating device , as derived from illocutionary act and propositional content of an illocutionary act . The focus will then be on Searle s conditions for the illocutionary act of promising, and the rules for the use of the function-indicating device for promising, which he derives from these conditions. There will finally be a brief overview on revisions and amendments Searle developed on his theory after 1965. These include a more detailed classification of speech acts and a distinction between speaker meaning and sentence meaning.

Essay from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Durham University, language: English, abstract: Emily Bronte's "e;Wuthering Heights"e; was written between October 1845 and June 1846 and was first published in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell. The narrative structure in "e;Wuthering Heights"e; is striking. Interestingly, there is not only one narrator. The main narration, narrated by Nelly Dean, is embedded into Lockwood's report of events. In addition, Lockwood finds a diary entry from Catherine in the beginning and quotes parts of it, and Nelly includes the contents of a letter written by Isabella, as well as several eyewitness accounts into her narrative. The following essay aims to identify the significance of Lockwood and Nelly as narrators in "e;Wuthering Heights"e;, and to work out their impacts on the reader. There will first be a general examination of the narrative style of Lockwood and Nelly respectively, and then the effect of these styles on the reader will be examined in more detail. An attempt will then be made to prove that "e;Wuthering Heights"e; is in fact a story about exclusion and deficient sympathy between human beings, and that the narrative voices serve to demonstrate and highlight these elements.
