Reliability problems arise with increasing frequency as our systems of telecommunications, information transmission, transportation, and distribution become more and more complex. In December 1989 at DIMACS at Rutgers University, a Workshop on Reliability of Computer and Communication Networks was held to examine the discrete mathematical methods relevant to these problems. There were nearly ninety participants, including theoretical mathematicians, computer scientists, and electrical engineers from academia and industry, as well as network practitioners, engineers, and reliability planners from leading companies involved in the use of computer and communications networks. This volume, published jointly with the Association for Computing Machinery, contains the proceedings from this Workshop. The aim of the Workshop was to identify the latest trends and important open problems, as well as to survey potential practical applications.The Workshop explored questions of computation of reliability of existing systems and of creating new designs to insure high reliability, in addition to the closely related notion of survivability. Redundancy, single stage and multistage networks, interconnected networks, and fault tolerance were also covered. The Workshop emphasized practical applications, with many invited speakers from a variety of companies which are dealing with practical network reliability problems. The success of the Workshop in fostering many new interactions among researchers and practitioners is reflected in the proceedings, which provide an exciting look at some of the major advances at the forefront of this important field of research.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications Applications of Combinatorics and Graph Theory to the Biological and Social Sciences is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1987-88 IMA program on APPLIED COMBINATORICS. These ideas are: RNA chains as "words" in a 4 letter alphabet; interval graphs; competition graphs or niche overlap graphs; qualitative stability; balanced signed graphs; social welfare functions; and semiorders. For each idea, some basic results are presented, some recent results are given, and some open problems are mentioned.

This is the story of a young black man, Howard Lee Johnson, who was born to unwed parents in Selma, Alabama during the turbulent racial upheaval of the mid-sixties. His father, a young civil rights worker sent to Alabama to instruct blacks in voter registration, impregnated Howard Lees teenage mother and vanished before he was born. His mother, aunt and grandmother raised him in a God-fearing manner with all the love they could muster, but it wasnt enough. He soon falls in love and marries a Christian girl named Charlotte. During the next ten years they have two wonderful kids, and he lives the life of Rileyuntil he begins an affair with Naomi, a bartender and former prostitute, and Charlotte kicks him out. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics, ISI 2005, held in Atlanta, GA, USA in May 2005.The 28 revised full papers, 34 revised short papers, and 32 poster abstracts presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on data and text mining, infrastructure protection and emergency response, information management and security education, deception detection and authorship analysis, monitoring and surveillance, and terrorism informatics.

Intelligence and security informatics (ISI) can be broadly defined as the study of the development and use of advanced information technologies and systems for national and international security-related applications, through an integrated technological, organizational, and policy-based approach. In the past few years, ISI research has experienced tremendous growth and attracted substantial interest from academic researchers in related fields as well as practitioners from both government agencies and industry. The first two meetings (ISI 2003 and ISI 2004) in the ISI symposium and conference series were held in Tucson, Arizona, in 2003 and 2004, respectively. They provided a stimulating intellectual forum for discussion among previously disparate communities: academic researchers in information technologies, computer science, public policy, and social studies; local, state, and federal law enforcement and intelligence experts; and information technology industry consultants and practitioners. Building on the momentum of these ISI meetings and with sponsorship by the IEEE, we held the IEEE International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI 2005) in May 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to the established and emerging ISI research topics covered at past ISI meetings, ISI 2005 included a new track on Terrorism Informatics, which is a new stream of terrorism research leveraging the latest advances in social science methodologies, and information technologies and tools. ISI 2005 was jointly hosted by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; the University of Arizona (UA); and the Georgia Institute of Technology (GATECH).
