Over the past few decades, agent-based modelling and agent-based computational technologies have spread into research on business and management. Agent-based modelling takes account of individual behavior alongside interactions within and across organizations and their competitive environment, seeking to explain complex, macro-level patterns emerging from micro-level behavior. These characteristics make an agent-based approach useful for studying a number of open issues in management, including adaptive behavior and dynamics in and across organizations, variable outcomes caused by management practices, and bridging micro-and macro-levels in organizational analysis.In The Oxford Handbook of Agent-based Computational Management Science, Friederike Wall, Shu-Heng Chen, and Stephan Leitner bring together a wide array of experts in the field to give a comprehensive overview of this novel approach in management science. In particular, the volume focuses on adaptive behavior and dynamics in and across organizations, non-linearities caused by management practices, and bridging micro-and macro-levels in organizational analysis. Der Österreichische Wissenschaftstag widmete sich 2021 dem Thema "Modellbildung und Simulation in den Wissenschaften".Modelle sind vereinfachte Abbilder realer Zusammenhänge und Entwicklungen. Insbesondere wenn sie mithilfe der Mathematik formuliert werden, dienen sie oft auch in Simulationen der Darstellung möglicher Entwicklungen der untersuchten Realobjekte, wo Experimente nicht möglich oder zu kostspielig sind. Dementsprechend sind Modellbildung und Simulation auch Gegenstände komplexer Diskurse und werfen eine Vielzahl an Fragen auf, die sich auch gerade aktuell im Rahmen der Covid-19 Pandemie stellen. Im Rahmen der Beiträge im 24. Band der Reihe "Wissenschaft-Bildung-Politik" wollen wir diese Fragen interdisziplinär diskutieren.

In particular, this approach is based on the use of agent-based simulations and further computational techniques. The main aim is to analyze the outcomes at the overall systems’ level as results from the agents’ behavior at the micro-level. These emergent characteristics of complex economic and social systems can neither be foreseen nor are they intended. The emergence rather makes these systems function. Artificial Economics especially facilitates the investigation of this emergent systems’ behavior. ​

Die Shareholder Value-Orientierung hat das Controlling stark beeinflusst und sich in zahlreichen Controllinginstrumenten niedergeschlagen. Unabhängig von der Kritik, die an einer konsequenten Ausrichtung des Unternehmensgeschehens am Unternehmenswert bisweilen geäußert wird, lassen sich in jüngerer Zeit Entwicklungen ausmachen, die möglicherweise neue Anforderungen an das Controlling begründen und eine verstärkte Stakeholder-Orientierung verlangen. Zu nennen sind beispielsweise Themen wie demographischer Wandel, Klimawandel oder auch die immer wieder gestellten Anforderungen an die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung von Unternehmen. Auch birgt die zunehmende Internationalisierung unternehmerischer Aktivitäten neue Herausforderungen für Unternehmen. Der Herausgeberband ist auf die Frage gerichtet, in welchen Anforderungen an das Controlling sich diese aktuellen Entwicklungen niederschlagen und welche Controllingkonzepte und insbesondere -instrumente zu ihrer Bewältigung bereitstehen. Das Buch richtet sich sowohl an Controller in der Unternehmenspraxis, die aktuelle Tendenzen frühzeitig antizipieren und sich darauf vorbereiten wollen als auch an Wissenschaftler und Studierende.
