Similar creatures are found in classical literature, particularly Ovid''s Metamorphoses. Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte, Baron Fouqué (12 February 1777 – 23 January 1843) was a German writer of the romantic style."

Obwohl das umfangreiche Werk Friedrich Fouqués sich immer international gebärdet, nach Norddeutschland geht, aber auch in die Normandie, die Heimat von Fouqués Vorfahren, nach Italien, wo Fouqué niemals selber war, nach Byzanz oder in den Norden, nach Island und Norwegen – immer sind es gedankliche Reisen des Romantikers, unabhängig von Eindrucken durch private Reisetätigkeit. Das vorliegende Werk, Reise-Erinnerungen Fouqués und seiner damaligen Frau Caroline aus den Jahren 1822 und 1823, bildet eine gewisse Ausnahme. Mit ihrer Reise durch Chursachsen, die Grafschaft Eickenburg und Böhmen betraten die Fouqués sozusagen „fremde Pfade“ (Anm. 2). Hatten sie ihre Reisen bis dato vor allem nach Berlin-Brandenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, in Teile Norddeutschlands und die Umgebung ihres langjährigen Wohnortes Nennhausen geführt, so ging es 1822 nach Dresden, Meissen, Prag und Dux sowie in das berühmte böhmische Karlsbad. Das Staunen über die vielen neuen Eindrücke lässt sich jeder Seite der zweibändigen Erinnerungen entnehmen. Während sich Friedrich Fouqué in seiner Lieblingsrolle als romantischer Poet zeigt, sind die Proben aus den Reisenotizen seiner Frau Caroline gänzlich anders gehalten. Sie zeichnet gelungene Bilder sächsischer und böhmischer Städtelandschaften. Bemerkungen über Kunst und Kultur, über Bauwerke und Historie wechseln sich ab mit manchmal durchaus humoristischen Seitenbemerkungen, etwa über die Eigenheiten katholischer Mönche aus der Sicht der Protestantin Caroline. So sind die zwei Bände der Reise-Erinnerungen ein echtes Gesamtkunstwerk zweier verschieden veranlagter und unterschiedlich schreibender und beobachtender Schriftsteller. Die zwei Bücher von 1823 sind eine Rarität auf dem antiquarischen Büchermarkt und werden hier als wortgetreuer Reprint wieder vorgelegt. Mit einem Nachwort von Christoph F. Lorenz.
