Most organic chemical reactions are carried out in an organic solvent, with no thought being given to whether it is necessary to do so, with the associated problems of reaction efficiency and potential pollution problems. It was discovered recently that most organic reactions can be conducted in the absence of solvent in the solid state. In many cases, the solid state reaction proceeds more easily and efficiently, with even greater selectivity than in solution, showing that molecules move easily and selectively in the solid state. There are many avenues to explore in studying organic solid state reactions, such as enantioselective reactions, which can easily be performed in an inclusion complex crystal with an optically active host. Catalytic reactions in the solid state are often more economically and ecologically profitable than the liquid state counterparts. The six contributions collected here present a guide to the possibilities and opportunities afforded by solid state organic reactions.

Many important pharmaceutical drugs, chemicals for the organic synthesis of chiral compounds, electronic elements such as liquid crystals, and polymeric materials are chiral (enantiomeric). The development of new practical methods for the preparation of enantiomerically pure substances is thus vital. Enantiomer Separation is written by several experts working in modern enantiomer separation chemistry who understand the needs of the many scientific and engineering chemists who need a cost-efficient supply of optically active materials of high quality. This book contains the following modern practical methods of enantiomer separation: Practical methods of enantiomer separation are important both in the research laboratory and in industry, especially in the pharmaceutical, fine chemical and electronic industries. Chemists and engineers, as well as students who are working in the field of chiral compounds in universities, institute and industry, will find this book an invaluable resource.

Most organic reactions have long been carried out in organic solvents without concern for their real necessity, reaction efficiency, and pollution problems. Very recently, we have found that most organic reactions can be carried out in the absence of a solvent, namely, in the solid state. In many cases, the solid-state reaction proceeds more easily and efficiently, and even more selectively than solution reaction. This shows that molecules move easily and selectively in the solid state. This finding changed the classical idea which suggests "molecules do not move and reactions do not occur in the solid state", and opened up a new research field for the study molecular dynamics in the solid state. The organic solid state reactions have many possibilities to be developed. For example, enantioselective reactions can easily be accomplished by carrying out the reaction in an inclusion complex crystal with an optically active host compound. Catalytic reactions also proceed in the solid state. Moreover, the solid-state reactions are more economical and ecologically sound. In the future, pollution-free synthetic procedures in the solid state will become increasingly important, not only in chemical industries but also in university laboratories.

Enantiomer Separation is written by several experts working in modern enantiomer separation chemistry who understand the needs of the many scientific and engineering chemists who need a cost-efficient supply of optically active materials of high quality. This book contains the following modern practical methods of enantiomer separation: Inclusion complexation of a racemic compound with a chiral host compound, which gives chiral host-chiral guest inclusion compounds, from which the chiral guest can be obtained. When this separation is combined with distillation technique, for example, enantiomer separation can be accomplished by fractional distillation in the presence of a chiral host compound. This is a modern and "green" procedure of enantiomer separation. These separation methods are described in several chapters of the book. Biological separation methods and "green" methods are covered in two chapters. Enantiomer separation by chromatography on a column containing chiral solid phase is one of the most up-to-date and well known "green" methods of enantiomer separation. Two experts in chromatography have contributed to provide two very important chapters on this method of separation. Practical methods of enantiomer separation are important both in the research laboratory and in industry, especially in the pharmaceutical, fine chemical and electronic industries. Chemists and engineers, as well as students who are working in the field of chiral compounds in universities, institute and industry, will find this book an invaluable resource.
