The ensuing complexity and ambiguity create manifold challenges to widely established theories, methodologies, epistemologies and ontologies. The contributions to this volume engage with conceptual issues of scale in the Anthropocene with a focus on mediated representation and narrative. They are centered around the themes of scale and time, scale and the nonhuman and scale and space. This volume examines the topic of German-language nature writing in a broad historical context spanning more than two centuries. It brings together contributions on the debates of the category ''Nature Writing’ by numerous renowned international scholars. It discusses literary texts of natural history, nature exploration, nature poetry perception and reflection by German-speaking authors since the 18th century, including texts by Ulrike Draesner and on Esther Kinsky’s writing. The book asks whether the here discussed texts can, should, or may also be labeled as ''Nature Writing'' and how this new perspective on German literary history might change traditional classifications such as “Naturlyrik” (nature poetry) in German literary history.

Die Arbeit untersucht, wie die Einbildungskraft als Vermögen zwischen Empfindung und Verstand in verschiedenen Kontexten der Moralphilosophie, Psychologie, Physiologie, Anthropologie, Ästhetik und Poetik in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts als Problem erörtert wurde. Dieser Prozeß wird unter Rückgriff auf das frühaufklärerische Schrifttum (Malebranche, Shaftesbury, Thomasius-Schule, Wolff) in begriffs-, wissens- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Perspektive rekonstruiert. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf der vordisziplinären Anthropologie der Aufklärung. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Aufwertung der ''unteren Seelenkräfte'' eine Neukonzeption des psychophysiologischen Zusammenhanges verlangt. Hierbei kommt dem Halleschen Diskussionskontext von Medizin und Philosophie um 1750 eine zentrale Bedeutung zu: in der Kontroverse von animistischen und mechanistischen Modellen der Empfindung wurde sowohl die Frage der psychischen Wirksamkeit der Einbildungskraft auf den Körper als auch ihrer physiologischen Determinierbarkeit verhandelt. Problematisch war vor allem die mögliche ausschweifende, regellose Wirkung der Einbildungskraft, die detailliert an den Gegenständen von Traum, Schwärmerei und Wahnsinn auseinandergesetzt wurde. Die daraus folgende Forderung nach einer Kontrolle der Assoziation der Ideen erstreckte sich auch auf die vermögenspsychologisch fundierte Ästhetik und Poetik, die sich die Verbesserung der Einbildungskraft durch eine sinnlich-ästhetische Erziehung zur Aufgabe machte.

In der deutschen Literatur und Publizistik des 19. Jahrhunderts nimmt die Südsee als ersehntes, erforschtes und kolonial erobertes Paradies einen großen, bisher kaum untersuchten Raum ein. Gabriele Dürbeck weist von Chamissos Reisebericht von 1821 bis zur Populär- und Zeitschriftenliteratur um 1900 ein nahezu gleichbleibendes, bereits im 18. Jahrhundert etabliertes Repertoire an exotistischen und perhorreszierenden Stereotypen des Fremden nach. Dieses dient aber unterschiedlichen ästhetischen, wissenschaftspopularisierenden und politischen Darstellungsstrategien und -funktionen. Zivilisations-, Missionierungs- und Kolonialkritik greifen auf dieselben Stereotype und Topoi des Fremden zurück wie die Werbung für einen ‚Platz an der Sonne‘ und die Rechtfertigung nationaler, expansiver und kolonialer Bestrebungen. In neun Fallstudien werden (populär-)wissenschaftliche Reiseberichte und Zeitschriftenbeiträge, Abenteuerromane sowie Memoiren von Kaufleuten, Siedlern, Kolonialbeamten und Ethnographen untersucht. Die textanalytische und diskursgeschichtliche Studie zielt auf eine materialnahe Spezifizierung von Befunden der Interkulturalitätsforschung und wertet erstmals ein vielschichtiges und heterogenes literarisches Material aus. Auf diese Weise wird die Verschiebungen innerhalb eines konstanten, aber äußerst facettenreichen Ozeanismus-Diskurses aufgezeigt.

Das Handbuch bietet erstmals einen umfassenden interdisziplinären Überblick über die postkoloniale Theorie und Forschung in den Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften. Es verbindet die Einführung in das Thema mit einer kritischen Zwischenbilanz zu diesem internationalen Forschungsfeld. Auf einen Theorieteil und die lexikalische Darstellung von postkolonialen Grundbegriffen folgen Artikel zur Literatur-, Kultur- und Mediengeschichte des Kolonialismus und Postkolonialismus in den betroffenen Kulturräumen sowie ein Anhang mit historischen Überblicken zu einzelnen Ländern und weiterführenden Informationen. Das Handbuch richtet sich an wissenschaftliche Leserinnen und Leser und bietet Ansatzpunkte für künftige Forschung, soll aber auch für Studierende und interessierte Laien eine verlässliche Basis zur Auseinandersetzung mit der europäischen Kolonialgeschichte, ihren kulturellen Resonanzen und ihrer postkolonialen Aufarbeitung in Literatur und Kultur bereitstellen. 

In den letzten Jahren beginnt die Debatte um ein ‚New Nature Writing‘ auch im deutschsprachigen Literaturbetrieb Fuß zu fassen. Lässt sich die aus einer langen angelsächsischen Literaturtradition (White; Thoreau) stammende Kategorie ‚Nature Writing’ im deutschsprachigen Raum über die Gegenwartsliteratur hinaus auch für die Literaturgeschichte produktiv machen? Welche transnationalen Verbindungen gibt es, in welchem Verhältnis steht das Nature Writing zur Tradition der Naturlyrik und weiteren literarischen Gattungen? Warum hat sich in der Germanistik das Nature Writing als Kategorie bislang kaum etablieren können? Wäre eine neue, eigene Benennung nicht sinnvoller? Mit diesen und weiteren Fragen setzen sich international anerkannte Literaturwissenschaftler*innen in Beiträgen u.a. zu Brockes, Goethe, Novalis, Hölderlin, A. v. Humboldt, Stifter, Fontane, Lehmann, Kolmar, Kafka, Sebald, Handke und Kinsky kritisch auseinander und zeigen Kontroversen und neue Perspektiven auf.

Der sich seit 2000 etablierende Anthropozän-Diskurs begreift die Menschheit als geophysikalische Kraft. Wesentliche Strukturmerkmale dieses Diskurses und seiner Narrative sind das Einnehmen einer planetarischen Perspektive auf die globale Umweltkrise, eine tiefenzeitlich konstituierte Historizität, die Annahme unauflösbarer Wechselbeziehungen von Natur und Kultur und das Thematisieren ethischer Verantwortung des Menschen für das Erdsystem. Die literaturwissenschaftliche Forschung hat in den letzten Jahren das Anthropozän als geologisches sowie kulturelles Konzept aufgenommen und spricht zunehmend häufiger von ‚anthropozäner‘ Literatur. Der vorliegende Band mit 15 Beiträgen und einer Einleitung, die das Feld erstmals vermisst, stellt einen innovativen Versuch in der deutschsprachigen Forschungslandschaft dar, Ansätze zusam­menzutragen, die die Rede von einer Anthropozän-Literatur in diesem entstehenden Forschungsfeld präzisieren, systematisieren und kritisch befragen. Dabei geht es um mögliche Poetiken und Genres. In Fallstudien (‚Lektüren‘) werden mögliche anthropozäne Lesarten ausprobiert.
