This book is an introduction to graph transformation as a foundation to model-based software engineering at the level of both individual systems and domain-specific modelling languages.

The first part of the book presents the fundamentals in a precise, yet largely informal way. Besides serving as prerequisite for describing the applications in the second part, it also provides a comprehensive and systematic survey of the concepts, notations and techniques of graph transformation. The second part presents and discusses a range of applications to both model-based software engineering and domain-specific language engineering. The variety of these applications demonstrates how broadly graphs and graph transformations can be used to model, analyse and implement complex software systems and languages. 

This is the first textbook that explains the most commonly used concepts, notations, techniques and applications of graph transformation without focusing on one particularmathematical representation or implementation approach. Emphasising the research and engineering methodologies used, it will be a valuable resource for graduate students, practitioners and researchers in software engineering, foundations of programming and formal methods.

This volume pays tribute to the scientific achievements of Hartmut Ehrig, who passed away in March 2016.

The contributions represent a selection from a symposium, held in October 2016 at TU Berlin,  commemorating Hartmut’ s life and work as well as other invited papers in the areas he was active in.

These areas include Graph Transformation, Model Transformation,  Concurrency Theory, in particular Petri Nets, Algebraic Specification, and Category Theory in Computer Science.

Graphs are widely used to represent structural information in the form of objects and connections between them. Graph transformation is the rule-based manipulation of graphs, an increasingly important concept in computer science and related fields. This is the first textbook treatment of the algebraic approach to graph transformation, based on algebraic structures and category theory.

Part I is an introduction to the classical case of graph and typed graph transformation. In Part II basic and advanced results are first shown for an abstract form of replacement systems, so-called adhesive high-level replacement systems based on category theory, and are then instantiated to several forms of graph and Petri net transformation systems. Part III develops typed attributed graph transformation, a technique of key relevance in the modeling of visual languages and in model transformation. Part IV contains a practical case study on model transformation and a presentation of the AGG (attributed graph grammar) tool environment. Finally the appendix covers the basics of category theory, signatures and algebras.

The book addresses both research scientists and graduate students in computer science, mathematics and engineering.

By presenting state-of-the-art research results on various aspects of formal and visual modeling of software and systems, this book commemorates the 60th birthday of Hartmut Ehrig.

The 24 invited reviewed papers are written by students and collaborators of Hartmut Ehrig who are established researchers in their fields. Reflecting the scientific interest and work of Hartmut Ehrig, the papers fall into three main parts on graph transformation, algebraic specification and logic, and formal and visual modeling.
