Part of the broader research field of natural computing, Membrane Computing is an area within computing science that aims to abstract computing ideas and models from the structure and functioning of living cells, as well as from the way the cells are organized in tissues or higher order structures. It studies models of computation (known as P systems) inspired by the biochemistry of cells, in particular by the role of membranes in the compartmentalization of living cells into "protected reactors".This handbook provides both a comprehensive survey of available knowledge and established research topics, and a guide to recent developments in the field, covering the subject from theory to applications. The handbook is suitable both for introducing novices to this area of research, and as a main source of reference for active researchers. It sets out the necessary biological and formal background, with the introductory chapter serving as a gentle introduction to and overview of membrane computing. As CMOS semiconductor technology strides towards billions of transistors on a single die new problems arise on the way. They are concerned with the - minishing fabrication process features, which a?ect for example the gate-to-wire delay ratio. They manifest themselves in greater variations of size and operating parameters of devices, which put the overall reliability of systems at risk. And, most of all, they have tremendous impact on design productivity, where the costs of utilizing the growing silicon ‘real estate’ rocket to billions of dollars that have to be spent on design, veri?cation, and testing. All such problems call for new - sign approaches and models for digital systems. Furthermore, new developments in non-CMOS technologies, such as single-electron transistors, rapid single-?- quantum devices, quantum dot cells, molecular devices, etc. , add extra demand for new research in system design methodologies. What kind of models and design methodologies will be required to build systems in all these new technologies? Answering this question, even for each particular type of new technology generation, is not easy, especially because sometimes it is not even clear what kind of elementary devices are feasible there. This problem is of an interdisciplinary nature. It requires an bridges between di?erent scienti?c communities. The bridges must be built very quickly, and be maximally ?exible to accommodate changes taking place in a logarithmic timescale.

This volume originated in the Workshop on Membrane Computing, WMC- CdeA 2002, which took place in Curtea de Arge, s, Romania, during August 19- 23, 2002.This was the third annual workshop held in Curtea de Arge,s.The ?rst one, Workshop on Multiset Processing, WMP-CdeA 2000, took place in August 2000, and the proceedings were published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science, volume 2235.The second one, Workshop on Membrane Comp- ing, WMC-CdeA 2001, took place in August 2001, and selected papers were published as a special issue of Fundamenta Informaticae, volume 49, numbers 1-3, 2002. The aim of these workshops is to provide a stimulating environment for - searchers working in the area covered by a given workshop, so that existing sci- ti?c collaborations can be strengthened, and new collaborations (and friendships) can be initiated.Indeed, all three workshops held up to now were of such ch- acter, with very international attendance and collaboration taking place across national and scienti?c boundaries.

Petri Nets represent a long and sustained effort· to develop concepts, theories and tools to aid in design and analysis of concurrent systems. They are used in many areas of computer science including software engineering, data base and in formation systems, computer architecture and operating systems, communication protocols and computer networks, process control, and socio-technical systems such as office communication and man-machine interaction. Quite substantial theory has been developed for Petri Nets. It reflects all major problem areas of concurrent distributed systems and covers many successfully applied principles and analysis techniques for systems organisation. Since the time that C. A. Petri has presented his original ideas, a rich body of knowledge has been developed-a recent bibliography (in Advances in Petri Nets 1981) includes more than 2000 entries. Already in 1979 an Advanced Course on Petri Nets was organized in Hamburg, West Germany, aiming at systematizing the existing knowledge and making it well accessible to a wide audience of computer scientists interested in theory and applications of concurrent systems. This course has turned out to be successful in the sense that it has initiated a lot of new research into applications and theory of Petri Nets. This had led to· another Advanced Course in 1986 in Bad Honnef, West Germany - where during two weeks more than 30 lectures were presented covering the most important current developments in the area of Petri Nets.

The present volume is the second of two parts which constitute the proceedings of the 1986 Advanced Course on Petri Nets in Bad Honnef. It discusses tools supporting the design of petri nets as well as their modification and analysis, presents a variety of applications, and covers the relationship of petri nets to other concurrency models. The aim of these series of volumes "Advances in Petri Nets" is to present to the general computer science community the most significant recent results with regard to the development in the area. The generic term "graph-grammars" refers to a variety of methods for specifying (possibly infinite) sets of graphs or sets of maps. The area of graph-grammars originated in the late 60s motivated by considerations concerning pattern recognition - since then the list of areas which have interacted with the development of graph-grammars has grown quite impressively. It includes pattern recognition, software specification and development, VLSI layout schemes, data bases, lambda-calculus, analysis of concurrent systems, massively parallel computer architectures, incremental compilers, computer animation, complexity theory, developmental biology, music composition, representation of physical solids, and many others. This volume is based on the contributions presented at the third international workshop on graph-grammars and their applications, held in Warrenton, Virginia, USA in December 1986. Aiming at the best possible representation of the field not all of the papers presented at the meeting appear in this volume and some of the papers from this volume were not presented at the workshop. The volume consists of two parts: Part I presents tutorial introductions to a number of basic graph and map rewriting mechanisms. Part II contains technical contributions. This collection of papers provides the reader with an up-to-date overview of current trends in graph-grammars.

This volume, "Petri Net Technology for Communication-Based Systems," is a state-of-the-artreportin the seriesAdvances in Petri Nets. It showshowvarious well-established and new Petri net notions and techniques can be used for m- elingcommunication-basedsystems,withspecialfocusonwork?owmanagement and business processes. In the last 6 years this topic has been studied by the DFG Forschergruppe Petri Net Technology in Berlin in close cooperation with the international c- munity. The main results of this cooperation were presented at the 1st and 2nd InternationalColloquiaonPetriNetTechnologiesforModelingCommunication- Based Systems, held in Berlin in 1999 and 2001,respectively. A careful selection of contributions by members of the DFG Forschergruppe and by international experts in this ?eld are presented in this volume. Taking into account the fru- ful discussions during the two colloquia and the cross-refereeing process for the accepted papers, a high degree of common understanding was achieved, leading to a highly comprehensive presentation in this volume. The topics of the papers in this volume can be roughly classi?ed into the following two areas: - Petri net technology and - application to communication-based systems.Since most papers comprise aspects of both areas, we chose an alphabetic order. However, in the following we give a rough overview of the contributions in both areas according to the main focus of the corresponding papers.

This was the Fourth Annual Membrane Computing Workshop, and the ?rst one held outside Romania. The ?rst three meetings were organized in Curtea de Arge, s, Romania - they took place in August 2000 (with the proceedings published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 2235), in August 2001 (with a selection of papers published as a special issue of F- damenta Informaticae, Vol. 49, Nos. 1-3, 2002), and in August 2002 (with the proceedings published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 2597). The 2003 workshop was the second workshop of the Molecular Computing Network (MolCoNet) funded by the EU Commission in the Fifth Framework Program Information Society Technologies (project number IST-2001-32008). The very ?rst model of concurrent and distributed systems was introduced by C.A. Petri in his seminal Ph.D. thesis in 1964. Petri nets has remained a central model for concurrentsystemsfor40 years,andthey areoften usedasa yardstick for other models of concurrency. As a matter of fact, many other models have been developed since then, and this research area is ?ourishing today. The goal of the 4th Advanced Course on Petri Nets held in Eichsta ..tt, Germany in September 2003 was to present applications and the theory of Petri Nets in the context of a whole range of other models. We believe that in this way the participants of the course received a broad and in-depth picture of research in concurrent and distributed systems. It is also the goal of this volume to convey this picture. The volume is based on lectures given at the Advanced Course, but in order to provide a balanced p- sentation of the ?eld, some of the lectures are not included, and some material not presented in Eichst. att is covered here. In particular, a series of introductory lectures was not included in this volume, as the material they covered is well - tablishedby now,andwellpresentedelsewhere (e.g.,inW.ReisigandG. This Festschrift celebrates the 70th birthday of Arto Kustaa Salomaa (born in Turku, Finland on June 6, 1934), one of the most in?uential researchers in theoretical computer science. Most ofhis researchconcernstheory - he is one of the founding fathers of formal language and automata theory, but he has also made important contributions to cryptography and natural computing. His approach to research in theoretical computer science is exemplary and inspirational for his students, collaborators, andthereadersofhispapersandbooks. Forhim,theroleoftheory(incomputer science) is to discover general rules of information processing that hold within computer science and in the world around us. One should not waste time on research concerning passing artifacts (or fashionable topics of the moment) in computer science - theory should be permanently predictive, insightful, and inspiring. That's why we chose the title "Theory is Forever". The main source of his in?uence on theoretical computer science is his publi- tions. Arto is a born writer - his papers and books are always most elegant.He has a unique gift for identifying the real essence of a research problem, and then presenting it in an incisive and eloquent way. He can write about a very involved formal topic and yet avoid a (much too common) overformalization. Many of his writings are genuine jewels and belong to the classics of theoreticalcomputer science. Theyhaveinspiredgenerationsofstudentsandresearchers. Indeed,even computers as well as computer science have learned a lot from Arto's publi- tions - this is nicely illustrated by DADARA on the cover of this volume.
