This Festschrift celebrates the 70th birthday of Arto Kustaa Salomaa (born in Turku, Finland on June 6, 1934), one of the most in?uential researchers in theoretical computer science. Most ofhis researchconcernstheory - he is one of the founding fathers of formal language and automata theory, but he has also made important contributions to cryptography and natural computing. His approach to research in theoretical computer science is exemplary and inspirational for his students, collaborators, andthereadersofhispapersandbooks. Forhim,theroleoftheory(incomputer science) is to discover general rules of information processing that hold within computer science and in the world around us. One should not waste time on research concerning passing artifacts (or fashionable topics of the moment) in computer science - theory should be permanently predictive, insightful, and inspiring. That's why we chose the title "Theory is Forever". The main source of his in?uence on theoretical computer science is his publi- tions. Arto is a born writer - his papers and books are always most elegant.He has a unique gift for identifying the real essence of a research problem, and then presenting it in an incisive and eloquent way. He can write about a very involved formal topic and yet avoid a (much too common) overformalization. Many of his writings are genuine jewels and belong to the classics of theoreticalcomputer science. Theyhaveinspiredgenerationsofstudentsandresearchers. Indeed,even computers as well as computer science have learned a lot from Arto's publi- tions - this is nicely illustrated by DADARA on the cover of this volume.

ICCAL '89 is the second in a series of International Conferences on Computer Assisted Learning. The first one was organized by the Institute for Computer Assisted Learning (ICAL) of the University of Calgary, May '87. The success of this first ICCAL demonstrated the need for a regular international, high-caliber conference on post-secondary education which brings together an expanded list of issues concerning computer learning. The coherency of the ICCAL conference series is assured by an international steering committee, and a group of experts in the field acting as the advisory board. This volume consists of about forty papers selected by the program committee from one hundred submissions. It also includes printed versions of a number of invited presentations by outstanding scholars in the field.

This volume contains selected papers from the symposium "NewResults and NewTrends in Computer Science" held in Graz,Austria, June 20-21, 1991. The symposium was organized togive a wide-ranging overview of new work in the field on theoccasion of the fiftieth birthday of the editor of thevolume. This volume is dedicated to Professor Arto Salomaa on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The 32 invited papers contained in the volume were presented at the festive colloquium, organized by Hermann Maurer at Graz, Austria, in June 1994; the contributing authors are well-known scientists with special relations to Professor Salomaa as friends, Ph.D. students, or co-authors. The volume reflects the broad spectrum of Professor Salomaa's research interests in theoretical computer science and mathematics with contributions particularly to automata theory, formal language theory, mathematical logic, computability, and cryptography. The appendix presents Professor Salomaa's curriculum vitae and lists the more than 300 papers and 9 books he published.

This textbook is more than a standard introduction to databases: It is a comprehensive set of tools that makes the teaching and learning of basic facts about databases and hypermedia much easier. On an undergraduate level the basic ideas of relational, object-oriented, and hypermedia data models and databases are explained, both in printed form with many illustrations and in the form of 26 "lessons" of courseware. This relieves the instructor of much of the burden of preparing transparencies, and allows the students to repeat or study lecture material in electronic form that follows exactly the printed presentation.
