This is the first comprehensive critical examination in any language of the German national tradition of historiography. It analyzes the basic theoretical assumptions of the German historians of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and relates these assumptions to political thought and action. The German national tradition of historiography had its beginnings in the reaction against the Enlightenment and the French Revolution of 1789. This historiography rejected the rationalistic theory of natural law as universally valid and held that all human values must be understood within the context of the historical flux. But it maintained at the same time the Lutheran doctrine that existing political institutions had a rational basis in the will of God, though only a few of these historians were unqualified conservatives. Most argued for liberal institutions within the authoritarian state, but considered that constitutional liberties had to be subordinated to foreign policy - a subordination that was to have tragic results. Mr. Iggers first defines Historismus or historicism and analyzes its origins. Then he traces the transformation of German historical thought from Herder's cosmopolitan culture-oriented nationalism to exclusive state-centered nationalism of the War of Liberation and of national unification. He considers the development of historicism in the writings of such thinkers as von Humboldt, Ranke, Dilthey, Max Weber, Troeltsch, and Meinecke; and he discusses the radicalization and ultimate disintegration of the historicist position, showing how its inadequacies contributed to the political débâcle of the Weimar Republic and the rise of National Socialism. No one who wants to fully understand the political development of national Germany can neglect this study.

An examination of how historical thinking has changed in recent years, through a comparison between Eastern and Western epochs.Until recently almost all histories of historiography have focused on national developments or at best introduced a comparative note from a limited Western perspective. Only in the last few years have there been serious attempts to transcend these borders. The present volume examines turning points in historical thought in a variety of cultures. The essays in the first half of the book deal with fundamental reorientations in historical thinking in the pre-modern period since Antiquity, specifically in ancient Greece and China and in medieval Christian Europe, the Islamic world and again China. The essays all proceed from the premise that historical thought in none of these cultures was static but underwent profound changes over time. The essays in the second part deal with historical writing beginning with the professionalization of history in the nineteenth century. National history researched and composed around a master narrative constituted a major turning point in this period. Although the new paradigm emerged in the West, it was broadly accepted by historians throughout the world.in the twentieth century. Individual chaptersdeal with conceptions of scientific history in the West, a comparison of national histories in Japan, France, and the United States, and the invention of Chinese, African and Indian national histories; finally the critiques of the modern paradigm in postmodernist and postcolonial theory and a consideration of the shortcomings of these critiques.Georg Iggers is Professor Emeritus of History at the State University of New York at Buffalo; Q. This is the first text on historiography to adopt a comparative, global perspective for the modern era looking not only at developments in the West but at other historiographical traditions in East Asia, India, the Middle East, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa as well. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, the book examines the impact of Western ideas of history on historical writing elsewhere and their interaction with the local traditions in an age of imperialism and colonialism. The authors argue that Western ideas of history were nowhere directly adopted but were accommodated to long standing intellectual and cultural traditions facing the challenges of modernization in an increasingly global environment. The book follows these developments into the current period and discusses the criticisms of postmodernism and postcolonialism of the modern historical profession and the reactions and resonances of historians around the world today. Originally published in 2008, this is not a direct translation of the English edition but a careful revision and updating taking into account the discussions of recent years, With this in mind certain sections have been rewritten, particularly those dealing with global history, feminist and gender history, history and memory, Marxism, and Latin America.

It is not intended to duplicate the several works on the history of the Saint-Simonian movement, including the excellent study by Charlety, or the large periodical literature on various phases of Saint-Simonian economic, literary, aesthetic, feminist, and pacifist thought. Rather it analyzes systematically for the first time the political ideas of the Saint-Simonians and their social and cultural implications. In contrast to previous studies, this book utilizes extensively the periodical literature of the period 1829-1832 during which the political ideas of the movement underwent their greatest development. This study is an outgrowth of a doctoral dissertation written at the University of Chicago. Unlike the dissertation, this book attempts to study Saint-Simonian political ideas within the framework of the intellectual history of the early nineteenth century. I wish to give particular thanks to the members of my doctoral committee, Professors Louis Gottschalk, James L.
