Die Elegien des Properz wie die des Tibull sind nicht dem feierlichen Ton verpflichtet, der bei Klopstock und Hölderlin erklingt; neben vielem, das tief und ernst und schön ist, entzückt das Launige, das Spielerische romantischer Einfälle, das leicht Skurrile - wie im Dialog der Haustür mit dem ausgesperrten Liebhaber (Properz I 16). Ob Cynthia, ob Tibulls Delia, die schönen Römerinnen zur Zeit des Augustus begegnen uns als kluge, leidenschaftliche, zärtliche, aber oft auch grausame Frauen, und das Liebesverhältnis der Dichter zu ihnen ist beständigem Wechsel unterworfen. Wer je durchbohrt wurde von einem Pfeil "dieses Knaben", wird in den anmutigen Versen allenthalben dem eigenen Sehnen, dem eigenen Wüten und Hoffen und Zweifeln begegnen.
