On behalf of the organizing committee for EuroSSC 2007, we would like to welcome you to the proceedings of the second European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context. Although only in its second year, EuroSSC has already begun to attract significant interest from researchers in the rapidly evolving area of embedded sensing and intelligent objects in support of smart surroundings. Building on the success of the previous conference held in Enschede, The Netherlands, EuroSSC 2007 aimed to reflect two complementary viewpoints: a technology-driven viewpoint which encompasses the diversity of intelligent sensing and associated information processing and a user-driven viewpoint exploring scenarios, applications and interaction methods as they relate to smart surroundings. This year the conference received a total of 51 paper submissions. These represented contributions from 21 countries from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (69%); Asia (21%); and North America (10%). This obviously reflects the European origins of the conference. However we were particularly pleased by the high number of submissions from Asia reflecting the range and diversity of relevant work in that region. From these the program committee selected 17 papers (33%) for presentation at the conference after a rigorous review process. Every paper received at least three independent reviews, most received four and some five reviews.

This year marks the third edition of EuroSSC. It builds on the success of the past editions, held in Enschede, The Netherlands in 2006, and in Kendal, UK in 2007. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to EuroSSC 2008, in Zurich, Switerland. This volume contains the invited papers and technical peer-reviewed papers selected for presentation at the conference. At EuroSSC we aim to explore technologies, algorithms, architectures, p- tocols, and user aspects underlying context-aware smart surroundings, coop- ating intelligent objects, and their applications. Since its inception, EuroSSC has taken a complementary technology-driven and user-driven view to discuss these aspects. It is one of the particularities of EuroSSC, and the 2008 edition made no exception. In addition we emphasized aspects related to quality of c- text and context-aware feedback by actuator systems. This re?ects the growing importance that context processing in uncertain environments and sensor and actuator networks take in ambient intelligence environments. We received 70 paper submissions. They originate from 30 countries of - rope, the Middle East and Africa (66%), Asia (22%), North America (9%), and South America (3%). These numbers re?ect the European origins of EuroSSC, but also show that EuroSSC is a recognized and attractive platform for parti- pants from all regions of the world.

Welcome to the 5th European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context. EuroSSC 2010 is a venue for high-quality papers that describe both original and unpublished research advancing the state of the art in smart surroundings, context-awareness and networked embedded sensor and actuator systems. The conference brings researchers of a variety of disciplines, perspectives and g- graphical areas together. It aims to explore the implications of computing as it starts to surround us transparently, interwoven into the fabric of everyday life. Our Program Committee-composed of 28 leading international researchers in the ?elds of context recognition and smart sensing-accepted 13 papers to be published in these proceedings. We want to take the opportunity to express our gratitude to the diligent e?orts of all members of the EuroSSCProgramCommittee and the team for the localarrangements. We also wantto thank the over50 (co-)authorsfrom over13 countries for their contributions, shaping the EuroSSC into a true international venue. In addition to the o?cial conference proceedings, we are pleased to also - clude a short report about the Workshop on Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) platforms. We also want to express our thanks to the MonAMI coordinators, as without them the sharedworkshopwouldnot have been possible. We found that theworkshopsparkedinterestingdiscussionsbetweentheconferenceparticipants about the fascination topic of aging in a pervasive computing age.
