The discovery of this hitherto forgotten collection of paintings by Carl von Rzehaczek and possibly Lorenz Matthäus Carl Rigler lies not only in their quality and their historical value but as rare examples of skin diseases illustrated by doctors who were also artists. This book is a richly illustrated account of the clinical features, microscopic anatomy, and management of acne, acne-like disorders, and rosacea. The coverage includes all aspects of these diseases, from physiology to pathology, bacteriology, and endocrinology; special emphasis is placed on histopathology. Moreover, the full spectrum of pharmacological and physical methods of controlling the disorders are critically examined and the widely experienced team of authors present in detail their personal strategies for successful treatment.Since it was first published, Acne and Rosacea has become a well-known classic. The stratum corneum is a magnificent example of the successful adaptation of a tissue. Its efficient function is a prerequisite for life itself. We depend on its control of the movement of water through the skin and on its protective role in the prevention of penetration by pathogens or harmful substances. Apart from its functional importance, there is no escaping the fact that the most common skin disorders (psoriasis, eczema, inherited disorders of keratinization, acne) are 'characterised by abnormal keratinization and or scaliness. Despite all this, understanding of its chemistry, structure, physiology and involvement in disease has been sadly deficient; however, there are signs of enlightenment. This symposium is evidence of changed atti· tudes. Leading researchers from many countries have applied modem biomedical techniques and the methods of molecular biology to the many problems and questions posed by the stratum corneum. Although there have been several symposia and publications on the process of keratinization, few have been broadly based on the stratum corneum. Die Beeinflussung mikroklimatischer Faktoren der Haut unter einem Plastik-Okklusivverband stellt eine sehr wirksame Therapiemodifikation bei der Behandlung chronisch-entzündlicher (Ekzeme) oder hyperproliferativer (Psoriasis) Hauterkrankungen dar. Voraussetzung ist die Kenntnis der Wirkprinzipien einer derartigen Verbandstechnik. Sowohl Ärzte als auch Pflegepersonal müssen mit der korrekten Technik eines Okklusivverbandes vertraut sein. In the last fifty years dramatic progress has been made in the under­ standing of skin and skin diseases. Although we are still someway off understanding the ultimate causes of such disorders as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and the congenital disorder of keratinization, we now have considerable information on the physiological disturbances in various diseases. This has permitted and encouraged a rational approach to treatment. The successful use of antimitotic agents, immunomodulators and retinoids may be cited as examples. A major reason for this im­ provement may be the fact that researchers accept models for the in­ vestigation of skin diseases. Increasing numbers of them have become available in the past years. So many have been described that it is doubtful whether anyone researcher is aware of all the other models described - even in his own field of interest. This book is a challenge for those involved in the study of skin and its disorders to use the sundry models of skin that have proven helpful. It would be impossible for this work to be all-embracing but it is hoped that the choice of models offered in this publication will be stimulating and helpful in the solution of knotty skin questions.
