Glasses containing metallic nanoparticles exhibit very promising linear and nonlinear optical properties, mainly due to the surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) of the nanoparticles. The spectral position in the visible and near-infrared range and polarization dependence of the SPR are characteristically determined by the nanoparticles’ shapes. The focus of Ultra-Short Pulsed Laser Engineered Metal-Glass Nanocomposites is the interaction of intense ultra-short laser pulses with glass containing silver nanoparticles embedded in soda-lime glass, and nanostructural modifications in metal-glass nanocomposites induced by such laser pulses. In order to provide a comprehensive physical picture of the processes leading to laser-induced persistent shape transformation of the nanoparticles, series of experimental results investigating the dependences of laser assisted shape modifications of nanoparticles with laser pulse intensity, excitation wavelength, temperature are considered. In addition, the resulting local optical dichroism allows producing very flexibly polarizing optical (sub-) microstructures with well-specified optical properties. The achieved considerable progress towards technological application of this technique, in particular also for long-term optical data storage, is also discussed.

Knowledge of tumours of the salivary glands has advanced consider­ ably in the two decades that have elapsed since work was started on the first edition of Histological Typing of Salivary Gland Tumours. A great deal of information has been collected about newly de­ scribed tumour entities and the behaviour and prognosis of the pre­ viously classified tumours. Immunohistochemistry, cytophotometry, hybridization techniques, tissue culture and chromosomal analysis have increased our understanding of many tumours. Histological Typing Histological typing divides tumours of a given organ into different types according to their direction of differentiation. Although this may frequently indicate the underlying histogenesis of the tumour, it may be difficult or impossible to identify the cell of origin. Note is taken of the structure and function of cell types, as well as the overall growth pattern of the tumour, with the aim of matching these fea­ tures to those of a normal tissue found in the same organ. The principles of the second edition of the WHO Histological Typing of Salivary Gland Tumours are based on the following axioms: - The classification is orientated to the routine work of the surgical pathologist. The inclusion of rare but clearly defined tumour en­ tities should be helpful to surgical pathologists consulting with clinicians.

Die Speicheldrüsen sind in mannigfacher Weise in den Organismus eingebunden, so daß aus der Analyse des Speichels Rückschlüsse auf krankhafte Funktionen anderen Organsysteme gezogen werden können. Wechselwirkungen zwischen Speicheldrüsen und Organismus spielen in der Ätiologie und Pathogenese der verschiedenen Formen der Sialadenitis eine bedeutsame Rolle. Markers are such as oncogenes, growth factor receptors or genetic aberrations. The importance of these new markers shall be discussed concerning the different types of oral cancers and salivary gland tumours.
