Gerri Kimber – författare
- Häftad, Engelska, 2026Focusing on the first nineteen years of Katherine Mansfield’s life, from her birth in 1888 to her arrival in London in 1908 to be a writer, this new biography sheds new light on Mansfield’s childhood and teenage years as well as on her development as a writer. The biography draws extensively on previously unused archive material, including the research papers assembled by Ruth Elvish Mantz for her 1933 biography of Mansfield, detailed reminiscences of former school friends and acquaintances, Mansfield’s autograph book, birthday book, her early letters, notebooks and family papers. Using this rich seam of material, Gerri Kimber explores Mansfield’s home life and school days, her friendships, first infatuations and sexual experimentation both with young men and young women and her travels through the volcanic North Island of New Zealand and examines her earliest published stories which appeared in school magazines. What emerges is a picture of a feisty, mischievous, young girl and an expressive, non-conformist teenager: the unruly Kass Beauchamp who became Katherine Mansfield, the famous modernist writer.

One of The Guardian’s Best Biographies of 2025.This biography explores the life and work of Katherine Mansfield, one of literary modernism’s most significant writers. On the fringes of Bloomsbury, and friends with D. H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, T. S. Eliot and many others, Mansfield was at the heart of literary London at its most experimental. By the time of her death in 1923, aged just 34, she had broken boundaries and created new ways of writing that led her literary sparring partner Virginia Woolf to later admit that Mansfield’s ‘was the only writing I was ever jealous of’. Based on compelling new research, Gerri Kimber challenges previous conceptions surrounding the author’s life, uncovers friendships and relationships formerly barely acknowledged and offers innovative readings of Mansfield’s most celebrated stories. - Inbunden, Engelska, 2012

‘“We owe to her the prosperity of the ‘free’ story,” Elizabeth Bowen said of Katherine Mansfield: “she untrammelled it from conventions.” Here, at last, is the evidence in full: the edition Mansfield deserves.’Professor David Trotter, University of Cambridge'This much needed and very welcome work does two important things: It gives us all of Mansfield’s fiction, with useful notes; and it removes many of John Middleton Murry’s intrusions into the stories he edited after Mansfield’s death. We all owe the editors, Gerri Kimber and Vincent O’Sullivan, a debt of gratitude for this excellent edition of the work of a major modernist writer.'Professor Robert Scholes, Brown UniversityThe Edinburgh Edition of the Collected Fiction of Katherine Mansfield: Volume 1 Fiction 1898–1915Edited by Gerri Kimber and Vincent O’SullivanThe first complete edition of Katherine Mansfield’s fictionThese two volumes collect together 219 of Mansfield’s stories, including 4 newly discovered, previously unpublished stories. Together the volumes expand considerably upon the largest previous single collected edition of 85 stories. Gathered here are Mansfield’s best-loved stories, stories uncollected, unpublished or left incomplete during her lifetime, the full text of The Aloe, from which Mansfield shaped her ground-breaking work Prelude, and her own manuscript versions of several stories later ‘edited’ by her husband, John Middleton Murry. The volumes are arranged in chronological order, so that readers can trace Mansfield’s progress as a creative writer, month-by-month, from her first schoolgirl story in 1898 to her last completed story in July 1922.Mansfield will be read differently, and more accurately, as a result of this edition. The annotations and their cross-referencing to her letters and notebooks deepen what we know of the context and genesis of her fiction. This edition is testament to Mansfield’s importance among twentieth century English-language writers and to her rare and original handling of the short story form. The Edinburgh Edition of the Collected Works of Katherine Mansfield in 4 volumes - Inbunden, Engelska, 2012

Katherine Mansfield’s non-fiction collected in one volume for the first timeThis volume redefines Katherine Mansfield as a critic, translator and poet. Bringing together all of Mansfield’s poetry (some 179 poems and several songs), her literary translations (including letters by Anton Chekhov as well as those of Dostoevsky to his wife), her witty, sometimes scorching, parodies and pastiches, her imaginative aphorisms, her many incisive and heartfelt reviews of the novels of the day, and her essays, including those for the little magazine, Rhythm, this collection attests to the enormous variety and distinctiveness of the non-fiction writing that Mansfield produced, some of it unpublished until this edition. For the first time, Mansfield scholars and devotees can read all of Mansfield’s non-fiction work, which expands considerably on previous partial editions of her poems or critical writings. Arranged chronologically, and with perceptive notes and a General Introduction by two leading Mansfield scholars, this is, at last, the Edition that Mansfield deserves. This volume of Mansfield’s poetry and critical writing comprises:Book reviews (not collected since 1987 and incomplete)Poetry (not collected since 1988 and incomplete)Translations (not previously collected)Essays (not collected since 1987 and incomplete)Parodies (not previously collected)Pastiches (not previously collected)Key FeaturesMaterial has been out of print for decadesFully annotatedSome material has never been collected or seen before - E-bokPDF, Engelska, 2021

Katherine Mansfield has been widely recognised as one of the key authors of her generation, continuing to influence literary modernism and the short story genre through her nomadic existence, colonial perspective, eclectic interests and impressive range of literary acquaintances. This volume utilises these seemingly endless avenues for critical exploration, analysing Mansfield’s influences, including the familial, historical and geographical as well as literary and artistic approaches. Some connections are well established and acknowledged, some controversial, many still undiscovered. This volume brings a fresh collection of original viewpoints on Katherine Mansfield’s life and work, both of which, in her own case, are frequently indistinguishable. It investigates her fascinating connection with Poland which is explored in a complex and detailed way for the first time; suggests new or revised views on her connections to other English and American writers; and finally examines some of the aspects of her writing process, her engagement with the arts, imagination, memories and her constructions of different kinds of space.

The last collection of short stories published in her lifetime, The Garden Party and Other Stories would solidify Katherine Mansfield's place as the most prominent modernist short story writer of her generation. Early reviewers of the collection commented on the similarities it shared with her previous collection, Bliss and Other Stories; however, while contemporary reviews were mixed, many emphasised the psychological power of her stories, praising how she was able to bring her characters to life in a way simple action could not. While it contains some of Mansfield's most sophisticated and well-loved stories, several of the stories in The Garden Party initially appeared in the Sphere, and thus were often dismissed as inferior. Mansfield herself felt some of these stories fell short of her desired effect, though recent scholarship has revealed their greater complexity. The essays in this volume, by both seasoned and newer Mansfield scholars, work to continue this conversation. The collection also includes Mansfield-inspired short fiction, two translations of memorial poems dedicated to Mansfield by Chinese and French contemporaries with accompanying notes, and a recently re-discovered book review by Mansfield. In addition, Sydney Janet Kaplan provides a reflection on her personal meeting with Christopher Isherwood, a writer heavily influenced by the life and work of Mansfield - Häftad, Engelska, 2024

During Katherine Mansfield's life she experienced the effects of abortion, miscarriage, gonorrhoea, peritonitis, rheumatism and tuberculosis, and would take up a peripatetic existence constantly in search of more favourable climates. The First World War of 1914 1918 and the influenza pandemic of 1918 20 informed the zeitgeist of her times. This volume of essays explores the extent to which this resonant context of disease and death shaped Mansfield's literary output and her modes of thinking. Illness both stimulated and limited Mansfield's creativity she would write to fund her medical care while simultaneously limited by her poor health, writing in 1922: 'The real point is I shall have to make as much money as I can on my next book my path is so dotted with doctors'. As explored in this volume, her personal writings document the increasing influence of tubercular literary predecessors such as Anton Chekhov and John Keats, while her stories function compellingly as dialogue with loved ones who have been lost her brother, her mother, her grandmother endowing them with life in the process. - Häftad, Engelska, 2025

Katherine Mansfield's complicated relationship with London began in 1903, when her parents sent her and her two older sisters from New Zealand to Queen's College in Harley Street to be educated, and where they remained until the summer of 1906. As soon as she was back in Wellington, she longed to return, her parents finally agreeing to her returning to London to forge a career as a writer, no longer 'Kathleen Beauchamp' but 'Katherine Mansfield'. As an adult, Mansfield had a love/hate relationship with London, but it remained central to her literary career. Mansfield became part of a literary couple with John Middleton Murry, and together they forged connections with most of the important writers in London at that time, thanks to their editorship of several little magazines and their own published work. As the symptoms of Mansfield's tuberculosis increased, and she spent more and more time away from England, seeking a healthier climate, life in London became a series of brief sojourns. It remained, however, at the heart of her literary life until her early death. This book combines a range of cutting-edge scholarship on themes including Mansfield's school life, telephony, the weather, literary sources and influences, music, and hotels, also including reviews of relevant publications in the field, a diverse range of creative writing, and the first publication of notes by Mansfield's early friend and contemporary in London, Margaret Wishart. - Häftad, Engelska, 2026

Katherine Mansfield's astute eye for power imbalances, including those that are gendered, is apparent across her fiction. Her working life was also fraught with the types of material needs set out by Virginia Woolf in A Room of One's Own, published after Mansfield's death in 1929. Although the young Mansfield decided she 'could not be a suffragette' (in a letter of 17 September 1908 to Garnet Trowell), her work often addresses social injustices with portrayals of characters who are hemmed in by circumstance and reaching toward a sense of personal freedom and authenticity. This volume comprises a number of essays by Mansfield specialists on the theme of 'Katherine Mansfield's Women', in addition to a diverse range of creative writing and a reassessment of J. D. Fergusson's enigmatic portrait of a woman, titled Poise. By looking at the place of women in both her personal writings and fiction, it explores the textual and cultural aspects of Katherine Mansfield and the female experience in all its contexts. - Häftad, Engelska, 2027
