This book explores four guiding themes – reduced order modelling, high dimensional problems, efficient algorithms, and applications – by reviewing recent algorithmic and mathematical advances and the development of new research directions for uncertainty quantification in the context of partial differential equations with random inputs. Highlighting the most promising approaches for (near-) future improvements in the way uncertainty quantification problems in the partial differential equation setting are solved, and gathering contributions by leading international experts, the book’s content will impact the scientific, engineering, financial, economic, environmental, social, and commercial sectors.

Consisting of four contributions presented at the CIME summer school, the book presents several points of view and techniques to solve demanding problems of increasing complexity. The focus is on theoretical investigation and applicative algorithm development for reduction in the complexity – the dimension, the degrees of freedom, the data – arising in these models.
The book is addressed to graduate students, young researchers and people interested in the field. It is a good companion for graduate/doctoral classes.Real Time Reduced Order Computational Mechanics

This work is based on some experience acquired during lectures and exercises in classes taught at SISSA Mathematics Area in the Doctoral Programme “Mathematical Analysis, Modelling and Applications”, especially in computational mechanics classes, as well as regular courses previously taught at EPF Lausanne and during several summer and winter schools. The book is a companion for master and doctoral degree classes by allowing to go more deeply inside some partial differential equations worked out problems, examples and even exercises, but it is also addressed for researchers who are newcomers in computational mechanics with reduced order modeling.
In order to discuss computational results for the worked out problems presented in this booklet, we will rely on the RBniCS Project. The RBniCS Project contains an implementation in FEniCS of the reduced order modeling techniques (such as certified reduced basis method and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition-Galerkin methods) for parametric problems that will be introduced in this booklet.

This book provides a thorough introduction to the mathematical and algorithmic aspects of certified reduced basis methods for parametrized partial differential equations. Central aspects ranging from model construction, error estimation and computational efficiency to empirical interpolation methods are discussed in detail for coercive problems. More advanced aspects associated with time-dependent problems, non-compliant and non-coercive problems and applications with geometric variation are also discussed as examples.
