Gilbert White – författare

More than any other writer Gilbert White (1720-93) has shaped the relationship between man and nature. A hundred years before Darwin, White realised the crucial role of worms in the formation of soil and understood the significance of territory and song in birds. His precise, scrupulously honest and unaffectedly witty observations led him to interpret animals' behaviour in a unique manner. This collection of his letters to the explorer and naturalist Daines Barrington and the eminent zoologist Thomas Pennant - White's intellectual lifelines from his country-village home - are a beautifully written, detailed evocation of the lives of the flora and fauna of eighteenth-century England.

The letters of the eminent naturalist Gilbert White are full of precise, unaffected and delightful observations of the wildlife of his beloved village of Selborne, describing the habits, colours and songs of birds from lapwings to barn-owls, wrens to house-martins. Here too are exquisite writings on trees, fossils, bats and rainfall, filled with intellectual curiosity and joy in the natural world.Generations of inhabitants have helped shape the English countryside - but it has profoundly shaped us too. It has provoked a huge variety of responses from artists, writers, musicians and people who live and work on the land - as well as those who are travelling through it. English Journeys celebrates this long tradition with a series of twenty books on all aspects of the countryside, from stargazey pie and country churches, to man's relationship with nature and songs celebrating the patterns of the countryside (as well as ghosts and love-struck soldiers).

"In a country of parching drought, stinking streams, and muddy floods" (to use the author''s words), the management of America''s water resources is, and promises to remain, a vital national issue. Yet, while there exist many proposed plans and normative studies in the field of water management little attention has been devoted to the analysis of decisions which have actually been made, and the projects which have actually been undertaken. As Dr. White observes: "... it is not common to analyze water resource activity in terms of the character of decisions made and the strategies they reflect."The theme of this volume is that by examining how people make their choices in managing water from place to place and time to time we can deepen our understanding of the process of water management, and thereby aid in finding more suitable ends and means of manipulating the natural water system."In Strategies of American Water Management, Dr. White outlines a framework in which society''s decisions as to water management may be examined, and then discusses six of the major strategies which have been practiced in the United States. Of each strategy the author asks: Who makes what choices? What is the effect upon the public welfare? What is the effect upon the environment? Drawing on personal experience with national and regional water planning efforts, Dr. White in his analysis points up an emerging shift in man''s attitude toward nature—the replacement of the view of man as "conqueror" by the view of "harmonizer" and "co-operator." This penetrating and informed study—by an acknowledged authority in the field—constitutes an important contribution toward the intelligent and responsible solution of the problem of American water management.

More than two centuries after its first publication, this pioneering work still makes essential reading for naturalists, ecologists, conservationists and lovers of English literature and the English countryside. Almost 300 editions and reissues of The Natural History of Selborne testify to its the lasting and universal appeal, but none before has been so beautifully and fittingly illustrated. Gilbert White’s painstaking study of the fauna and flora of his native parish, Selborne in Hampshire, first appeared in 1789 and has delighted and inspired generations of readers ever since. His regular correspondence, beginning in 1767, with two distinguished naturalists forms the basis of The Natural History of Selborne, which was published in the form of his letters to them. The fascination of the book lies in the magic of its prose and the vividness of its description, which have earned it the distinction of being the only work on natural history to have received equal acclaim as a masterpiece of English literature. To complement the text, 124 colour plates have been faithfully reproduced from the hand-coloured engravings of Gilbert White’s contemporaries, giving an invaluable extra dimension to this most captivating of books.
