Over the past 15 years there have been considerable advances in understanding visual processing. These advances have been fuelled by such developments as, among others, the use of powerful computing systems that enable processing algorithms to be carried out in real time, the application of experimental paradigms developed with normal observers to provide more accurate analyses of patients with impaired vision, and the development of new learning algorithms that can be applied in artificial neural networks. The study of vision is a study in which researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds - computer science, neuropsychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence - can usefully cooperate and share the research results and developments from the individual fields. Indeed, it is likely that future advances will depend on just such interdisciplinary collaborations. "Understanding Vision" brings together leading researchers from the different disciplines. The contributors attempt to provide a state-of-the-art review of work being carried out in their field, together with a discussion of how this work fits in to the broader perspective of vision research.

Vision allows us to do many things. It enables us to perceive a world composed of meaningful objects and events. It enables us to track those events as they take place in front of our eyes. It enables us to read. It provides accurate spatial information for actions such as reaching for or avoiding objects. BORB provides a set of standardised procedures for assessing neuropsychological disorders of visual object recognition, based on tests developed in the cognitive neuropsychological literature. The tests are introduced in terms of cognitive neuropsychological analyses of object recognition, and guidance is given concerning test use and interpretation. The tests assess low-level aspects of visual perception (using same-different matching of basic perceptual features, such as orientation, length, position and object size), intermediate visual processes (e.g., matching objects different in viewpoint), access to stored perceptual knowledge about objects (object decision), access to semantic knowledge (function and associative matches) and access to names from object (picture naming). BORB will serve as an invaluable companion test battery to the PALPA test of language ability.

One important means to understanding normal cognitive functions is the study of the breakdown of these functions following brain damage. This book provides reviews of major case studies dealing with the breakdown of visual perception and recognition, including the disorders of motion vision, colour vision, perceptual integration, perceptual classification, recognition of particular categories of object, semantic access from vision (in optic aphasia), and recognition impairments with relative sparing of imagery. 1. Introdudion This volume collects together the refereed versions of 25 papers presented at the 5th Neural Computation and Psychology Workshop (NCPW5), held at the University of Birmingham from the 8th until the lOth of September 1998. The NCPW is a well-established, lively forum, which brings together researchers from a range of disciplines (artificial intelligence, mathematics, cognitive science, computer science, neurobiology, philosophy and psychology), all of whom are interested in the application of neurally-inspired (connectionist) models to topics in psychology. The theme of the 5th workshop in the series was Connectionist models in cognitive neuroscience', and the workshop aimed to bring together papers focused on the inter-relations between functional (psychological) accounts of cognition and neural accounts of underlying brain processes, linked by connectionist models. From the very beginnings of modern psychology, with the work of William James and his contemporaries, researchers have believed it important to relate behavioural analyses to neurological underpinnings. However, with the advent of connectionist modelling, where models are at least inspired by neuronal processes, this enterprise has received a new boost. With this volume, we hope that this volume adds one further mosaic stone to this ambitious objective, of unifying functional and neuronal accounts of performance.
