An International Symposium "Catecholamines and the Heart" was held in Munich in May 1981, which was organized in cooperation with the Council on Cardiac Metabolism of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology and with the Microcirculation Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology. It was the aim of the organizers to evaluate in this Symposium the recent advances made in the field of sympathetic control of heart function. Particular attention was given to neural sympathetic pathways, to mechanisms and consequences of adrenoceptor stimulation and blockade as well as to clinically relevant implications mainly regarding the significance of catecholamines and of adrenoceptors in various heart diseases. The broad scope was covered in 34 papers presented by physiologists, pharmacologists and cardiologists during a two day meeting which was attended by an international audience. This book includes all papers as well as the discussions following each presentation. To accomplish rapid publication the manuscripts are published as submitted by the authors. The discussions were edited making use of the written questions and answers of the discussants. The Symposium was generously sponsored by Astra Chemicals GmbH, Wedell Holstein, Germany, which thus made possible a very fruitful exchange of information, ideas and concepts between specialists in various disciplines. The organizers gratefully acknowledge this support once again and would like to thank Dr. T. Kreuzer, the representative of Astra Chemicals, for his personal engagement.

This volume is the product of a symposium held on 14-16 February, 1985 in Ham- burg in honour of the 65th birthday of Prof. Hans-Joachim Schumann. Schumann was born on 28 December, 1919 in Stralsund. He studied medicine in Cologne, Greifswald and Rostock. The chair of pharmacology in Rostock was held at that time by Peter Holtz. It was he who first introduced Schumann to pharma- cology in 1944 and who was his Doktorvater (research supervisor). Mter the war, Schumann again worked with Holtz in Rostock and then in Frankfurt am Main. He received decisive stimuli during a research fellowship, in 1956, in Prof. J. H. Burn's department in Oxford, where he also worked with Prof. H. Blaschko. In 1964 he ac- cepted his present position as ordentlicher (full) Professor and Head of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the then newly founded Medical Faculty of Es- sen. He has remained in Essen despite being offered the chair of pharmacology in G6ttingen in 1968.It is interesting to observe how in the main lines of his scientific work, which now spans 40 years, Schumann has followed the steps involved in autonomic neuro- transmission from transmitter release to transmitter-receptor interaction.

In the last decade, ACE inhibitors have become a cornerstone of cardiovascular drug therapy. Beneficial effects in patients with hypertension, heart failure, and post myocardial infarction have been established in large clinical trials. In parallel, ex- perimental research has shifted the interest from the immediate homeostatic function of the circulating renin-angiotensin-system to the multiple paracrine functions of local tissue renin-angiotensin-systems, including hypertrophy, hyperplasia, athe- oenesis, and vasomotion. . It was the aim or a symposium held in Hamburg, October 22-24, 1992, to bring together an international panel of experimental and clinical scientists and to discuss the most recent findings on the role of angiotensin and associated mediators in car- diovascular adaptation and disease, with a particular emphasis on the treatment of such disease by ACE inhibitors. The meeting and this publication were generously supported by Astra Chemicals. H. Grobecker G. Heusch B. E.
