This book explores the commercial modernity of Parisian urban culture and consumer culture in the 19th century.

Integrating the history of Paris with the history of consumption, the press, publicity, advertising and spectacle, this book traces the evolution of the urban core districts of consumption and explores elements of consumer culture such as the print media, publishing, retail techniques, tourism, city marketing, fashion, illustrated posters and Montmartre culture in the nineteenth century. Hahn emphasizes the tension between art and industry and between culture and commerce, a dynamic that significantly marked urban commercial modernity that spread new imaginary about consumption. She argues that Parisian consumer culture arose earlier than generally thought, and explores the intense commercialization Paris underwent.

Im Tagungsband zur Informationstagung "Mikroelektronik 87" werden die in Form von Kurzvorträgen und Posters dargebotenen Beiträge in übersichtlicher Form präsentiert und geben einen guten Überblick über den aktuellen Forschungs- und Wissensstand zu den Themenkreisen "Technologie und Zuverlässigkeit von Bauteilen und Systemen", "Sensoren in Industrie und Umweltschutz", "Elektronik im Verkehr", "Nachrichtentechnik und Datenkommunikation", "Medizintechnik und Biologie" und "Weltraum und Satellitentechnik". Die Autoren kommen aus Industrie und Forschung, so daß sowohl theorie- als auch praxisbezogene Erkenntnisse und Produkte vorgestellt werden. Die Tagung "Mikroelektronik" findet seit dem Jahr 1975 im Abstand von zwei Jahren statt und hat seitdem eine kontinuierliche Ausweitung im Vortragsangebot und im Publikumsinteresse erfahren. Der Tagungsband soll dazu beitragen, einer noch größeren Zahl von Interessenten eine Überschau über Stand und Zukunft der Mikroelektronik sowie Berichte über konkrete Applikationen, Methoden und Entwicklungen zu geben.

When discussing the drug, the bug, and the host in the past, emphasis was laid mainly upon the interaction between antibiotics and bacteria or the reaction of the host to the invading organism. Today, however, standardized immunologic parameters are available for evaluating cellular and humoral responses and an increasing number of publications deal with the host reaction to the antibiotics administered. Some re­ searchers and clinicians felt that the time had come to bring together investigators studying the influence of antibiotics on the host-parasite­ relationship. The first section of this book therefore covers the influence of chemotherapy on the host defense system. Here antibody production and cellular immunity, the influence of antibiotics on the function of phagocytic cells, and immunostimulation combined with antibiotics in the treatment of infection are presented. The second section deals with the influence of antibiotics on the produc­ tion of extracellular and cellular virulence factors by bacteria, the adherence of bacteria being of utmost importance here. In addition, phagocytosis and serum bactericidal activity are discussed. In Prof. Opferkuch and Prof. Hahn I found two colleagues keen and knowledgeable enough to organize the First International Meeting on the Influence of Antibiotics on the Host-Parasite-Relationship. These proceedings of the meeting constitute a survey of the latest develop­ ments in this field, and should be of interest to clinical and researchers.
