Previous scholarship on fascism in Slovakia has focused on either state actors operating from urban centres or the mechanisms of violence on a grassroots level - with the result being that the Holocaust is seen as primarily a top-down and state-centred process.In contrast, Hana Kubátová reveals here a dynamic and unexplored centre-periphery relationship, and how violence against the Jewish population unfolded in both cities and the countryside, and on both national and local levels. As an integral component of broader nation-building efforts, the authority of the fascist regime and the newly-founded Slovak state hinged not only on appeasing Hitler but also on civilian populations of the nation's heterogenous eastern borderlands, especially local elites, such as priest and teachers, as well as the rural masses. The book explores how this relationship was forged, how it was maintained, and how, ultimately, Christian nationalism operated as a political strategy that brought differently positioned actors together - to broker deals over resources and power accrued through the co-enactment of genocide by a broad coalition of perpetrators on the ground. In so doing, this little-known chapter of Holocaust history offers a new way to understand the dynamics and escalations of mass violence, and how collaborations between elite and popular groups can pave the way for ethnic cleansing across different territories and, even, times.

Providing diverse insights into Jewish–Gentile relations in East Central Europe from the outbreak of the Second World War until the reestablishment of civic societies after the fall of Communism in the late 1980s, this volume brings together scholars from various disciplines – including history, sociology, political science, cultural studies, film studies and anthropology – to investigate the complexity of these relations, and their transformation, from perspectives beyond the traditional approach that deals purely with politics. This collection thus looks for interactions between the public and private, and what is more, it does so from a still rather rare comparative perspective, both chronological and geographic. It is this interdisciplinary and comparative perspective that enables us to scrutinize the interaction between the individual majority societies and the Jewish minorities in a longer time frame, and hence we are able to revisit complex and manifold encounters between Jews and Gentiles, including but not limited to propaganda, robbery, violence but also help and rescue. In doing so, this collection challenges the representation of these encounters in post-war literature, films, and the historical consciousness. This volume considers the uses and misuses of the memory of assistance given to Jews during the Holocaust, deliberated in local, national, and transnational contexts. History of this aid has drawn the attention of scholars and the general public alike. Stories of heroic citizens who hid and rescued Jewish men, women, and children have been adapted into books, films, plays, public commemorations, and museum exhibitions. Yet, emphasis on the uplifting narratives often obscures the history of violence and complicity with Nazi policies of persecution and mass murder. Each of the ten essays in this interdisciplinary collection is dedicated to a different country: Belarus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine. The case studies provide new insights into what has emerged as one of the most prominent and visible trends in recent Holocaust memory and memory politics. While many of the essays focus on recent developments, they also shed light on the evolution of this phenomenon since 1945.
