In the course of the last two decades, both the historical reconstruction of the Iron I–Iron IIA period in Israel and Judah and the literary-historical reconstruction of the Books of Samuel have undergone major changes. With respect to the quest for the “historical David”, terms like “empire” or “Großreich” have been set aside in favor of designations like “mercenary” or “hapiru leader”, corresponding to the image of the son of Jesse presented in I Sam. At the same time, the literary-historical classification of these chapters has itself become a matter of considerable discussion. As Leonhard Rost’s theory of a source containing a “History of David’s Rise” continues to lose support, it becomes necessary to pose the question once again: Are we dealing with a once independent ‘story of David’ embracing both the HDR and the “succession narrative” are there several independent versions of an HDR to be detected, or do I Sam 16–II Sam 5* constitute a redactional bridge between older traditions about Saul on the one hand and David on the other? In either case, what parts of the material in I Sam 16-II Sam 5 are based on ancient traditions, and may therefore serve as a source for any tentative historical reconstruction? The participants in the 2018 symposium at Jena whose essays are collected in this volume engage these questions from different redaction-critical and archaeological perspectives. Together, they provide an overview of contemporary historical research on the book of First Samuel.

Recent studies have demonstrated that ancient Near Eastern societies considered themselves as part of one social fabric, divided not by mode of life or place of residence, but according to traditional associations of kin. Kinship relations appear to maintain their essential integrity over long periods of time, even within complex political organizations. In the past it was common to view state formation as an evolutionary process – from tribe to state – during which former kinship relations and tribal identities dissolve in face of the political identity imposed by the "state". Today, however, it seems that there were no evolutionary relations between the tribe and the state, as they both represent identities that coexist at the same time. It is against this background that a common structural element of ancient Levantine polities emerges: their fragmented nature, mostly based on an overarching concept of kinship. This book presents studies of different polities and societies from the Bronze and Iron Ages Levant and beyond, highlighting their kin-based social and political structures, interactions, and ultimate formations, as may be gleaned from both material and textual sources.

Der Band vereint die Beiträge eines im August 2012 in Jena gehaltenen Symposiums, dessen Hauptfrage es war, ob es etwas wie eine nachchronistische "Rückkopplung" in die Samuelbücher gegeben habe. Das Verhältnis von I-II Sam zu I Chr wird dabei sowohl generell als auch durch eine Reihe von Einzelfallstudien hinterfragt: Ist I Chr die relecture einer Samuelrolle? Falls ja, ist es möglich, einige der jüngsten Schichten in den Samuelbüchern als chronistisch beeinflusst, also als eine Art "rereading" der relecture zu bestimmen? In dieser Studie fragt Hannes Bezzel nach Saul, dem ersten König Israels, nicht als einer historischen Gestalt der "frühen Königszeit", sondern als literarischer Person, deren Entwicklung er diachron in den Blick nimmt. Einsatzpunkt ist die "frühe Rezeptionsgeschichte" bis zum Ende des ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts. An den jeweils unterschiedlichen Saulbildern im Väterlob Ben Siras, in Qumran (besonders in 4Q252), im Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum und in den Antiquitates Judaicae des Flavius Josephus arbeitet Bezzel Motive und Methoden des interpretierenden Umgangs mit der ambivalenten Gestalt Sauls heraus, die denen "innerbiblischer" Rezeptionsprozesse vergleichbar sind. Von hier ausgehend wird das Phänomen der " rewritten Bible / scripture " zunächst in die Chronik, dann in die Redaktionsgeschichte der Samuelbücher hinein weiter verfolgt. In seiner Analyse findet Hannes Bezzel eine ältere Saulüberlieferung in I Sam 9-10,16*; 11*; 14,47-51*. Der junge Benjaminit wird von einem Gottesmann auf eine Heldentat vorbereitet, schlägt die Ammoniter, wird König und als solcher retrospektiv mit einem rundweg positiven Nachruf bedacht. Im Rahmen eines erweiterten Samuel-Saul-Kranzes (I Sam 1*; 4*; 9-10,16*; 13-14*; 29*; 31*) wurde über die Figur Samuels mit der Ladeüberlieferung und einer Geschichte über Jonatan die Philisterthematik eingeführt. Auch gegen sie ist Saul zunächst im Kampf erfolgreich, er stirbt jedoch samt seinen Söhnen auf Gilboa. Erst in einem dritten Schritt wurde dieser Erzählkranz im Kontext der "Aufstiegsgeschichte" mit der Davidüberlieferung verbunden. Ab jetzt steht die geschichtstheologische Frage im Raum, warum der erste König Israels, obwohl Gesalbter JHWHs, nicht von seinem Sohn, sondern von David beerbt wurde.

Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes fragen nach Deutung und Bedeutung von divinatorischen Praktiken und Prophetie im Raum der griechischsprachig dominierten Ökumene in der Zeit nach dem Alexanderzug. Fallstudien beschäftigen sich mit Dokumenten aus Alexandria, der Redaktions- und frühen Rezeptionsgeschichte biblischer Bücher sowie Ciceros De Divinatione.
