This book emphasises both experimental and theoretical aspects of surface, interface and thin-film physics. As in previous editions the preparation of surfaces and thin films, their atomic and morphological structure, their vibronic and electronic properties as well as fundamentals of adsorption are treated. Because of their importance in modern information technology and nanostructure research, particular emphasis is paid to electronic surface and interface states, semiconductor space charge layers and heterostructures. A special chapter of the book is devoted to collective phenomena at interfaces and in thin films such as superconductivity and magnetism. The latter topic includes the meanwhile important issues giant magnetoresistance and spin-transfer torque mechanism, both effects being of high interest in information technology. In this new edition, for the first time, the effect of spin-orbit coupling on surface states is treated. In this context the class of the recently detected topological insulators, materials of significant importance for spin electronics, are discussed. Particular emphasis, hereby, is laid on the new type of topologically protected surface states with well-defined spin orientation. The fourth edition of "Solid Surfaces, Interfaces and Thin Films" has been used meanwhile as a standard textbook around the world at many universities and research institutions. Even though surface and interface physics have become a mature science branch, their theoretical concepts and experimental techniques are of higher importance than ever before because of their impact on nanostructure physics. Surface and interface physics form the basis for modern nanoscience, be it in quantum electronics, in catalysis, in corrosion, or in lubrication research. This explains the ever-growing demand for education in these elds. It was therefore time to carefully revise the book and bring it up to latest dev- opments both in fundamental research and in application. Concerning new ma- rial aspects topics about group III nitride surfaces and high k-oxide/semiconductor heterostructures have been included. Recent developments in these material classes are of essential importance for high-speed/high-power electronics and advanced - based CMOS technology on the nanometer scale.The novel eld of spin electronics or spintronics having been initiated by the detection of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) by Peter Grunberg and Albert Fert (Nobel Prize 2007) required a more extensive consideration of anisotropy effects in thin magnetic lms. For the devel- ment of purely electrical spin switching devices based on spin effects rather than on semiconductor space charge layers, a prerequisite for high-speed, low-power sp- tronics, the spin-transfer torque mechanism shows some promise. Correspondingly this topic is discussed in direct connection with the GMR in this new edition.

Our German textbook "Festkdrperphysik" has become rather pop ular among German-speaking students, and is currently produced in its 4th edition. Its version in English has already been adopted by many universities in the United States and other countries. This new 2nd edition corresponds to the 4th edition in German. In addition to correcting some typographical errors and making small improvements in the presentation, in the present edition some chapters have been revised or extended. Panel V, for example, has been extended to include a description of angle-resolved photoemis sion and its importance for the study of electronic band structures. Section 10.10 on high-temperature superconductors has completely been rewritten. This active field of research continues to progress rapidly and many new results have emerged since the publication of the first edition. These results shed new light on much of the fun damental physics. The new version of Sect. 10.10 has been developed in discussions with colleagues who are themselves engaged in superconductivity research. We thank, in particular, Professor C. Calandra from the University of Modena and Dr. R. Wordenweber of the Institute of Thin Film and Ion Technology at the Research Centre Jiilich. Surface physics in the classical sense of ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) based - perimental approaches to understand well-de?ned surfaces has now become a mature branch of condensed matter research. Meanwhile, however, the th- retical concepts and experimental techniques developed in this ?eld have also become the basis for modern interface, thin ?lm and nanostructure science. Furthermore, these research ?elds are of fundamental importance for more applied branches of science, such as micro- and nanoelectronics, catalysis and corrosion research, surface protection, chemo- and biosensors, microsystems and nanostructured materials. The physics of solid surfaces, interfaces and thin ?lms is thus an important ?eld which needs to be taught to all students in physics, microelectronics, engineering and material science. It is thus no surprise that this topic has now entered the corresponding university curricula throughout the world. In the present 4th edition of this book (formerly entitled “Surfaces and - terfaces of Solid Materials”) more emphasis is placed on the relation between the surfaces, interfaces and thin ?lms, and on newly discovered phenomena related to low dimensions. Our German textbook "Festkorperphysik" has meanwhile appeared in its th nd 6 edition, extensively revised and extended in comparison to the latest 2 English edition. Presently, the book has been translated into Japanese, Kor ean and Polish and is used as a standard text in many universities around the world. It is therefore high time to carefully revise the English text and th bring it up to par with the latest 6 German edition. The sections on "High Temperature Superconductors" as well as Panel XVI on "Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations and Quantum Hall Effect" are completely revised accord rd ing to the present deeper understanding of the phenomena. This 3 English edition has furthermore been expanded by several chapters to meet the edu cational requirements for recent fields of research. We let ourselves be guided by the idea that modern teaching of solid state physics emphasizes aspects of material science and its applications, in particular in solid state electronics. Accordingly, deviations from the ideal periodic solid have gained more weight in the text: we now consider phase diagrams of alloys, some basics of defect physics and amorphous solids. Because of the impor tance of strained layer systems in device physics, inclusion of the funda mentals of crystal elasticity theory seems (again) necessary, so a new chap ter is devoted to this topic.

Das Kapitel über Supraleitung gibt auch eine kurze Darstellung der bisherigen Ergebnisse auf dem sich rasch entwickelnden Gebiet der Hochtemperatur-Supraleiter. Zusätzlich wurde das Kapitel über Halbleiter wesentlich erweitert und schließt jetzt auch die Thematik der Halbleiterheterostrukturen und Übergitter sowie den Quanten-Hall-Effekt und Methoden der Epitaxie mit ein.
