Writing a textbook is an undertaking that requires strong motivation, strong enough to carry out almost two years of solid work in this case. My motivation arose from three sources. The first was the ever-increasing pressure of our German administration on research institutions and individuals to divert time and attention from the pursuit of research into achieving politically determined five-year plans and milestones. The challenge of writing a textbook helped me to maintain my integrity as a scientist and served as an escape. A second source of motivation lay in my attempt to understand transport pr- esses at the solid/electrolyte interface within the framework of concepts developed for solid surfaces in vacuum. These concepts provide logical connections between the properties of single atoms and large ensembles of atoms by describing the physics on an ever-coarser mesh. The transfer to the solid/electrolyte interface proved nontrivial, the greatest obstacle being that terms such as surface tension denote different quantities in surface physics and electrochemistry. Furthermore, I came to realize that not infrequently identical quantities and concepts carry diff- ent names in the two disciplines. I felt challenged by the task of bringing the two worlds together. Thus a distinct feature of this volume is that, wherever approp- ate, it treats surfaces in vacuum and in an electrolyte side-by-side. The final motivation unfolded during the course of the work itself.

Electron energy loss spectroscopy has become an indispensable tool in surface analysis. Although the basic physics of this technique is well understood, instrument design has previously largely been left to intuition. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive treatment of the electron optics involved in the production of intense monochromatic beams and the detection of scattered electrons. It includes a full three-dimensional analysis of the electron optical properties of electron emission systems, monochromators and lens systems, placing particular emphasis on the procedures for matching the various components. The description is kept mathematically simple and focuses on practical aspects, with many hints for writing computer codes to calculate and optimize electrostatic lens elements.

Das Buch wendet sich an Studierende der Physik, der Materialwissenschaften sowie der Elektrotechnik mit Schwerpunkt Halbleiterphysik/ Halbleiterbauelemente. This new edition of the well-received introduction to solid-state physics provides a comprehensive overview of the basic theoretical and experimental concepts of materials science. Our German textbook "Festkdrperphysik" has become rather pop­ ular among German-speaking students, and is currently produced in its 4th edition. Its version in English has already been adopted by many universities in the United States and other countries. This new 2nd edition corresponds to the 4th edition in German. In addition to correcting some typographical errors and making small improvements in the presentation, in the present edition some chapters have been revised or extended. Panel V, for example, has been extended to include a description of angle-resolved photoemis­ sion and its importance for the study of electronic band structures. Section 10.10 on high-temperature superconductors has completely been rewritten. This active field of research continues to progress rapidly and many new results have emerged since the publication of the first edition. These results shed new light on much of the fun­ damental physics. The new version of Sect. 10.10 has been developed in discussions with colleagues who are themselves engaged in superconductivity research. We thank, in particular, Professor C. Calandra from the University of Modena and Dr. R. Wordenweber of the Institute of Thin Film and Ion Technology at the Research Centre Jiilich. In recent decades solid state physics has seen many dramatic new developments and has become one of the largest independent branches of physics. It has simultaneously ex­ panded into many new areas, playing a vital role in fields that were once the domain of the engineering and chemical sciences. A consequence of this explosive development is that no single university lecturer can today be expected to have a detailed knowledge of all aspects of this vast subject; likewise, it is impossible to conceive of a course that could offer students a comprehensive understanding of the entire discipline and its many applications. In view of this situation, it is particularly valuable to have a textbook that gives a concise account of the essential elements of the physics of solids. In this book the fun­ damental aspects of solid state physics are presented according to the scheme: Chemical bonding, structure, lattice dynamics, and electronic properties. We believe that this se­ quence is the optimum choice for tutorial purposes. It enables the more difficult con­ cepts to be introduced at a point where a basic understanding of fundamental ideas has already been achieved through the study of simple models and examples. In addition to this carefully structured exposition of classical solid state theory based on the periodic solid and the one-electron approximation, the book also includes comprehen­ sive descriptions of the most active areas in modern research: Magnetism, superconduc­ tivity and semiconductor physics.

Our German textbook "Festkorperphysik" has meanwhile appeared in its th nd 6 edition, extensively revised and extended in comparison to the latest 2 English edition. Presently, the book has been translated into Japanese, Kor­ ean and Polish and is used as a standard text in many universities around the world. It is therefore high time to carefully revise the English text and th bring it up to par with the latest 6 German edition. The sections on "High Temperature Superconductors" as well as Panel XVI on "Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations and Quantum Hall Effect" are completely revised accord­ rd ing to the present deeper understanding of the phenomena. This 3 English edition has furthermore been expanded by several chapters to meet the edu­ cational requirements for recent fields of research. We let ourselves be guided by the idea that modern teaching of solid state physics emphasizes aspects of material science and its applications, in particular in solid state electronics. Accordingly, deviations from the ideal periodic solid have gained more weight in the text: we now consider phase diagrams of alloys, some basics of defect physics and amorphous solids. Because of the impor­ tance of strained layer systems in device physics, inclusion of the funda­ mentals of crystal elasticity theory seems (again) necessary, so a new chap­ ter is devoted to this topic.

Die erste Auflage hat bei Fachkollegen und Studenten eine überaus positive Resonanz gefunden. Insbesondere wurde die gleichrangige Behandlung theoretischer und experimenteller Aspekte der Festkörperphysik sowie die neuartige Darstellung wichtiger Experimente und aktueller Forschungsgebiete in der Form von Experimenttafeln gelobt. Neben Kritik an einigen spezifischen Schwächen der ersten Darstellung wurde vor allem das Fehlen einer Darstellung des Magnetismus und der Supraleitung bemängelt. Die zweite Auflage ist um je ein Kapitel über Magnetismus und Supraleitung erweitert. In beiden Kapiteln wird die Vielteilchenwechselwirkung in einfachen Grundmodellen beschrieben. Im Kapitel über Magnetismus werden sowohl die magnetische Kopplung lokalisierter Elektronen als auch delokalisierter Elektronen besprochen, und der Leser wird bis an moderne Dünnschichtexperimente herangeführt. Das Kapitel über Supraleitung gibt auch eine kurze Darstellung der bisherigen Ergebnisse auf dem sich rasch entwickelnden Gebiet der Hochtemperatur-Supraleiter. Zusätzlich wurde das Kapitel über Halbleiter wesentlich erweitert und schließt jetzt auch die Thematik der Halbleiterheterostrukturen und Übergitter sowie den Quanten-Hall-Effekt und Methoden der Epitaxie mit ein. Das Buch wendet sich an Studierende der Physik im Hauptstudium sowie an Studenten der Elektrotechnik mit dem Spezialgebiet Halbleiterphysik/Halbleiterbauelemente.

Die vierte Auflage dieses mittlerweile gut eingeführten Buches ist gegenüber der dritten Auflage korrigiert und wesentlich überarbeitet worden. Das Buch behandelt gleichrangig theoretische wie experimentelle Aspekte der Festkörperphysik, wobei besonders die neuartige Darstellung wichtiger Experimente und aktueller Forschungsgebiete in Form von Experimenttafeln hervorzuheben ist. Neben einer knappen Darstellung der Grundlagen der Festkörperphysik werden die Themen Supraleitung, Magnetismus und Halbleiter ausführlich behandelt. Das Buch wendet sich an Studierende der Physik im Hauptstudium, an Studenten der Materialwissenschaften sowie der Elektrotechnik mit dem Spezialgebiet der Halbleiterphysik/Halbleiterbauelemente.
