Hans von Storch and Nico Stehr, the authors of this anthology, reflect on the popular and scientific perception and construction of the phenomenon of climate, climate change, climate policy and the impact of climate on society. In the early 1990s, the authors encountered notable resistance to the idea of climate change, especially as they wrote about the urgent need for societal adaptation. Something is wrong with our planet, and it is obvious that this has to do with human conduct. Many, if not the majority, of countermeasures to climate impacts require the innovative capacity of science and technology. However, the translation of scientific knowledge into society is not an automatic or autonomous force. Moving science into society is subject to economic, political, and cultural constraints — a central issue of the book.Nico Stehr is a sociologist specializing in the theory of modern society and the sociology of knowledge; Hans von Storch is a mathematician and is also a physical climate scientist. Since the authors "inhabit" rather different scientific cultures, their collaboration is genuinely exemplary of transdisciplinary work. This anthology reviews the cooperation between scientists from Qingdao and scientists from Hamburg from the 1980s until about 2020. Initially, Professors Jürgen Sündermann (Hamburg University) and Wen Shengchang (Ocean University of China) were the primary drivers of this relationship, laying the groundwork for understanding the dynamics of China's marginal seas, and investigating how to build and run hydrodynamical models of the Bohai and Yellow Seas. Since 2010, this relationship has been further expanded by Professor Hans von Storch (Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon) and Professor Chen Xueen (Ocean University of China).Statistics and Modeling of Regional Climate Variability in China focuses on this productive second phase, and deals with methodologies, reconstructions, and potential future climate changes mainly in the Chinese marginal seas. The book reproduces 12 articles that arose from this shared research and contributed significantly to the existing knowledge base. The articles build upon each other, exploring useful applications such as wind energy and scenarios of possible future climate conditions, but also providing basic knowledge, for instance, regarding unforced variability ("noise"). Together they offer valuable insights into various facets of coastal oceanographic and climatic phenomena, and underscore the importance of international cooperation in advancing our understanding of the ocean and climate.

This book discusses sea-level and coastline changes. These topics are becoming increasingly important for populations living along the edge of the world’s oceans and seas, especially in areas where eustatic sea-level rise is superimposed on isostatic subsidence and storm-induced coastal erosion. This is the case at the southern and eastern Baltic Sea coast: in the south, glacio-isostatic subsidence enhances the effect of climate-induced sea-level rise and strong storm effects are causing a continuous retreat of the coast. On the eastern coast glacio-isostatic uplift compensates for eustatic sea-level rise, but storm-induced waves are responsible for permanent morphodynamic changes to the coastline. There is an increasing need for protection concepts for defense but also for the economic use of the different types of coastal zones. The elaboration of these management concepts can be facilitated through models that generate future projections of coastal developments in the light of modern climate change. This anthology comprises the results of the research project “Coastline Changes of the southern Baltic Sea – Past and future projection (CoPaF)” funded by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which was run by a team of Estonian, German, Lithuanian, and Polish geoscientists and coastal engineers from 2010 to 2013 and overlapped with and complemented the work of COST Action SPLASHCOS supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). As the southern and eastern Baltic serves as a natural laboratory for the investigation of coastal processes, the project’s findings contribute not only to the solution of regional problems in Baltic coastal research and engineering, but also to worldwide interests in description, modelling and parameterization of coastal processes and morphodynamics.

The main interest of the research center focuses on regional climatology and climate dynamics, interdecadal variations in the state of the Baltic and North Sea and related estuaries, and the flow ofheavy metals, nutrients, and other materials in river catchments to the coastal zones. This research aims at-developing an under standing ofchanges in the environment, both as a result ofinternal (natural) dynamics and as a result of anthropogenic interference. In an effort to dis seminate the results of these research activities, as well as to initiate a broad discussion among senior scientists in the field, and younger colleagues from all areas of the globe, the Institutes of Hydrophysics and Atmospheric Physics at GKSS have instituted the GKSS School of Environmental Research. Appliedenvironmental research has always containedanelement ofaware ness ofthe societal implications and boundary conditions associated with en vironmental concerns. Consequently, the School of Environmental Research adheres to the philosophy that all discussion regarding environmental change should incorporate a social component. This necessity has been well acknowl edged and is apparent by the incorporation ofsocial scientists into the series of lectures. Die Autoren sehen sich als Pioniere in diesem Politikfeld. Viele, wenn nicht die meisten Maßnahmen für den Klimaschutz und gegen die Klimafolgen erfordern die Innovationskraft aller Wissenschaften und der Technik. Viele, wenn nicht die meisten Maßnahmen für den Klimaschutz und gegen die Klimafolgen erfordern die Innovationskraft aller Wissenschaften und der Technik. Die künftige Umsetzung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse in der Klimapolitik ist Schlüssel des erfolgreichen Umgangs der Gesellschaft mit den Folgen des Klimawandels. Dies geschieht jedoch nicht automatisch. Die Umsetzung von Wissenschaft in die Gesellschaft unterliegt ökonomischen, politischen und kulturellen Zwängen, und kann insbesondere durch den Mehrwert interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlern, wie sie in diesem Band praktiziert wird, erreicht werden.

Alle Beiträge wurden einem wissenschaftlichen Begutachtungsprozess unterzogen, der von einem Lenkungsausschuss überwacht wurde.Die Dokumentation belegt umfassend eine bereits stattfindende Erwärmung in der Metropolregion Hamburg und in Norddeutschland, sowie einen Meeresspiegelanstieg an Nord- und Ostsee. Mit der Erwärmung zeichnen sich deutliche Änderung im Ökosystem ab. Diese bereits eingetretenen Entwicklungen können sich künftig weiter verstärken.
