Kurt Symanzik was certainly one of the most outstanding theoretical physicists of our time. For thirty years, until his untimely death in 1983, he helped to shape the present form of quantum field theory and its application to elementary particle physics. In memoriam of Kurt" Symanzik leading scientists present their most recent results, giving, at the same time, an overview of the state of the art. This collection was originally published in Vol. 97, 1/2 (1985) of Communications in Mathematical Physics. They range over various inter­ related topics of interest to Kurt Symanzik. Musikphilosophie ist, wie Kunstphilosophie überhaupt, keine fest etablierte akademische Disziplin. Sie tritt sporadisch in Erscheinung, wenn es zu einschneidenden Veränderungen in der musikalischen Praxis kommt undes notwendig wird, den Begriff der Musik neu zu fassen. Dies war der Fall, als sich die Symphonie vor gut zweihundert Jahren als prägende musikalische Gattung etablierte, und dies geschah, als es vor gut einhundert Jahren zur Preisgabe der Tonalität kam. Das Ereignis, welches das philosophische Interesse heute auf die Musik lenkt, ist die digitale Revolution. Sie stellt die Idee der Neuen Musik und ihren genuinen Kunstanspruch in Frage.

Zu den Gründungsmythen der Postmoderne gehört, dass sich die Kunst vom Neuheitsanspruch der Moderne verabschiedet habe. Tatsächlich wurde dieser Anspruch aber nicht preisgegeben, sondern nur reformuliert. Folgte die avancierte Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert weithin einer Materialästhetik, wie sie sich zum Beispiel im Kubismus oder in der seriellen Musik manifestierte, lässt sich heute eine Hinwendung zur Gehaltsästhetik beobachten. Neuheit wird von Künstlern wie Ai Weiwei oder Damien Hirst nicht länger im ästhetischen Material gesucht, sondern in dem durch ein Werk artikulierten neuen ästhetischen Gehalt. Diese gehaltsästhetische Wende der Künste ist die Quintessenz von Harry Lehmanns Kunstphilosophie. Auf der Grundlage einer Theorie der ästhetischen Eigenwerte, zu denen Schönheit, Erhabenheit, Ereignis und Ambivalenz gehören, erzählt er die europäische Kunstgeschichte neu als eine Geschichte der ästhetischen Erfahrung. Zahlreiche Beispiele aus den Bildenden Künsten, der Dichtung und der Musik, aber auch aus Werbung, Mode und Design machen diesen Paradigmenwechsel in den Künsten anschaulich und evident.

Seit beinahe einem halben Jahrhundert bestimmen Theorien der ästhetischen Erfahrung den Ästhetikdiskurs in Deutschland. Harry Lehmann zeigt in seiner Diskursanalyse, wie diese Diskussion in Abgrenzung zu Adornos Ästhetischer Theorie und im Rückgriff auf Kants Kritik der Urteilskraft ihre Diskursregeln definiert hat. Der Autor diskutiert, wie sich in diesem vorgegebenen Theorierahmen anschließend die prominentesten Erfahrungsästhetiken ausdifferenziert haben und wie dieser Diskurs zuletzt seine eigenen, konstitutiven Prämissen in Frage zu stellen beginnt. Problematisch ist nicht nur, dass etwa die Konzeptkunst in diesem Diskurs ›ästhetisch‹ interpretiert wird, sondern dass diesen Erfahrungsästhetiken im Prinzip die Theoriemittel fehlen, um auf die neusten Entwicklungen der Neuroästhetik und der KI-Ästhetik reagieren zu können. Lehmann schlägt deshalb ein Alternativmodell vor, das nicht länger der Kant''schen Traditionslinie folgt und mit einer begrifflichen Unterscheidung von ästhetischen und nichtästhetischen Phänomenen, Wahrnehmungen oder Urteilen einsetzt, sondern auf einer Praxis von Wahrnehmungsvergleichen beruht, deren sachliche und historische Voraussetzungen sich analysieren lassen.

Der blinde Fleck der SystemtheorieNiklas Luhmann entwarf seine Systemtheorie für die Funktionssysteme Wirtschaft, Recht, Politik und Ökonomie. Später beschrieb er mit diesem Ansatz zwar auch die sozialen Systeme von Kunst, Liebe und Religion. Dies führte allerdings zu einer Reihe von Aussagen, die zentralen Theoremen der "ersten" Systemtheorie widersprechen.Harry Lehmanns zentrale These ist: Diese Abweichungen von der "orthodoxen"Systemtheorie lassen sich als Strukturmerkmale eines anderen Typus von Kommunikationsmedien beschreiben. Diese "Humanmedien" schließen – anders als Wirtschaft, Recht und Wissenschaft – den Menschen nicht funktional aus den Kommunikationsprozessen aus. Sondern sie schließen im Gegenteil die Subjekte – mit ihren idiosynkratischen Wahrnehmungen, Empfindungen und Gedanken – in solche Prozesse gezielt ein.Die Kommunikation in Humanmedien ist in ganz eigener Weise codiert. Das hat weitreichende Folgen für unser Verständnis von Gesellschaft.
