These Proceedings contain both oral and poster contributions to the First International Conference "Field Screening Europe - Strategies and Techniques for On-Site Investigation and Monitoring of Contaminated Soil, Water and Air", held in Karlsruhe on September 29 - October 1, 1997. Environmental monitoring and the assessment of chemical contamination are becoming more and more important. The integrated study of environmental contamination in the field is a rather recent approach. "field screening" comprises field analytical tools, (quick) methods and strategies for on-site or in-situ environmental analysis and assessment of contamination. Field screening includes field analytical methods such as mobile laboratories, portable analyses, detectors, sensors, or noninvasive techniques, and also reconnaissance strategies and problems of measurement in heterogeneous media using, among others, new geotechnical and geophysical instruments.

One quarter of the world's population lives in karst terrains, yet karsts are highly vulnerable to stresses caused by human activity. This book surveys human impact on karst water, showing that the increasing pollution of the environment has, to a great extent, spoiled sensitive karst ecosystems. This text examines such consequences and offers proposals for future solutions and strategies. Part One provides an overview of the functioning of karsts and of human interaction with karst environments over several millennia. Part Two consists of a systematic examination of the major areas of human activity affecting karst waters, such as agriculture, industry, mining and water exploitation. Finally, Part Three views the effects on karst groundwater within a broader societal and legislative perspective and considers possible changes of methodology and approach.

This book addresses the characterization of flow and transport in porous fractured media from experimental and modeling perspectives. The volume explores porous media problems, from the origin of the present natural porous structures, to their characterization, and various flow and transport phenomena that exist within the porous media. Examples are miscible displacements in porous media and fractured rock and the physical and chemical interactions within porous fractured aquifers. The book is a comprehensive presentation of investigations performed and analyzed on different scales, supporting the understanding and application of experimental studies and numerical simulations.

Geophysical methods can be useful tools for detection of leakages in dams and waste disposal sites. Self-potential/geoelectrical and thermometrical techniques as well as infrared imagery procedures are still under development in this field of application, but there already is much international experience available. The papers presented here give a good review of the international state of the art.

Natural saline water, waste water, and irrigation return flow endanger the groundwater aquifers in the Rift. In the long run this will ruin the socio-economic backbone of the settlements in the area. Sustainability of the water resources will only be achieved when the process of water replenishment and its underground flow is understood and water extraction is regionally controlled. Rare earth element and spider patterns are presented as new tools for studying the hydrology. Progress in 3-D modelling of groundwater flow proved successfully the impact of pumping on the surroundings of wells and overexploitation of aquifers.

"Climatic Change and Water Resources in the Middle East and North Africa" is dedicated to high-priority topics related to the impact of climate change on water resources in a water scarce region. The subject is described and discussed in three main chapters and different case studies. The three main chapters are (1) Climatic changes - sources and effects on the water cycle, (2) Impact of climate change on water resources, (3) Water resources and water management. These chapters are split up into further 26 sections. A total of 64 individuals from many countries have made contributions to this book. All topics in this book are complimentary and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between global climate change, world water cycle and water resources. A valuable and meaningful interdisciplinary mixture of topics is combined in this book which will be of great interest to many scientists.

"Field screening" indicates field analytical tools, and (quick) methods and strategies for on-site or in-situ environmental analysis and assessment of contamination. "Field screening" includes not only field analytical methods, such as mobile laboratories, portable analyses, detectors, sensors, or noninvasive techniques, but also reconnaissance strategies and problems of measurement in heterogeneous media, using, among others, new geotechnical and geophysical instruments. This volume contains both oral and poster contributions to the Second International Conference on Strategies and Techniques for the Investigation and Monitoring of Contaminated Sites, "Field Screening Europe 2001", held in Karlsruhe, May 14 - May 16, 2001. As an integrated study of environmental contamination, "field screening" has become a more and more important part of environmental monitoring and the assessment of chemical contaminations. Recent developments are presented in these proceedings.Audience: Environmental engineers, geo-scientists, chemists, biologists, soil scientists, hydrologists and geophysicists.

These Proceedings contain both oral and poster contributions to the first interna tional conference" Field Screening Europe - Strategies and Techniques for On-Site Investigation and Monitoring of Contaminated Soil, Water and Air", held in Karls ruhe September 29 - October 1, 1997. Environmental monitoring and the assessment of chemical contaminations are be coming more and more important. The integrated study of environmental con tamination in the field is a rather recent approach. "Field screening" indicates such field analytical tools, (quick) methods and strategies for on-site or in-situ environmental analysis and assessment of contamination. The classical strategy for investigating contaminants consists of the following steps: site studies, sampling, sample transport to the laboratory, sample preparation, and analysis. This strategy is rather expensive and time consuming. Some investiga tions, including sample preparation, may last several days. In many cases, the results must be available immediately and are of importance for further decisions. Field screening is an alternative or complement to this strategy that attempts to be cheaper and faster and may achieve the same quality of results. The most important argument for field analytical methods is that the superior accuracy and high costs of laboratory methods are disproportional to the possibility of arti facts from sampling and errors originating from spatial variations of contaminants.
