This book describes the common ground between electricity markets (EMs) and software agents (or artificial intelligence generally). It presents an up-to-date introduction to EMs and intelligent agents, and offers a comprehensive description of the research advances and key achievements related to existing and emerging market designs to reliably and efficiently manage the potential challenges of variable generation (VG). Most EMs are unique in their complex relationships between economics and the physics of energy, but were created without the notion that large penetrations of variable generation (VG) would be part of the supply mix. An advanced multi-agent approach simulates the behavior of power markets over time, particularly markets with large-scale penetrations of renewable resources. It is intended as a reference book for researchers, academics and industry practitioners, but given the scope of the chapters and the highly accessiblestyle, the book also provides a coherent foundation for several different graduate courses.

The Brazilian Arti?cial Intelligence (AI) community decided in 2004 to organize an International Joint Conference, joining IBERAMIA 2006 (the 10th Ibero-American Arti?cial Intelligence Conference), SBIA 2006 (the 18th Brazilian Arti?cial Int- ligence Symposium), and SBRN 2006 (the 9th Brazilian Neural Networks Sym- sium). This decision was a consequence of the successful event organized in 2000, when the First International Joint Conference IBERAMIA/ SBIA 2000 (7th Ibero- American Arti?cial Intelligence Conference and 15th Brazilian Arti?cial Intel- gence Symposium) occurred in Brazil. Moreover, in 2006 the arti?cial intelligence community celebrated the golden anniversary of the 1956 Dartmouth Conference that marked the beginning of arti?cial intelligence as a research ?eld. th SBIA 2006 was the 18 conference of the SBIA conference series, which is the leading Brazilian conference for the presentation of AI research and applications. Since 1995, SBIA has become an international conference, with papers written in English, an international Program Committee, and proceedings published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Arti?cial Intelligence (LNAI) series. th IBERAMIA 2006 was the 10 conference of the IBERAMIA conference - ries, which has been one of the most suitable forums for Ibero-American AI researchers (from South and Central American countries, Mexico, Spain and Portugal) to present their results. Following the SBIA and EPIA (Portuguese Conference on AI) experiences, from IBERAMIA 1998 on, it has also become an international conference with proceedings published in Springer’s LNAI series.

Prolog has a declarative style. A predicate definition includes both the input and output parameters, and it allows a programmer to define a desired result without being concerned about the detailed instructions of how it is to be computed. Such a declarative language offers a solution to the software crisis, because it is shorter and more concise, more powerful and understandable than present-day languages. Logic highlights novel aspects of programming, namely using the same program to compute a relation and its inverse, and supporting deductive retrieval of informa tion. This is a book about using Prolog. Its real point is the examples introduced from Chapter 3 onwards, and so a Prolog programmer does not need to read Chapters 1 and 2, which are oriented more to teachers and to students, respec tively. The book is recommended for introductory and advanced university courses, where students may need to remember the basics about logic program ming and Prolog, before starting doing. Chapters 1 and 2 were also kept for the sake of unity of the whole material. In Chapter 1 a teaching strategy is explained based on the key concepts of Pro log which are novel aspects of programming. Prolog is enhanced as a computer programming language used for solving problems that involve objects and the relationships between objects. This chapter provides a pedagogical tour of pre scriptions for the organization of Prolog programs, by pointing out the main draw backs novices may encounter.
