This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 20th International Workshop on Multi-Agent-Based Simulation, MABS 2019, held in Montreal, QC, Canada, in May 2019 as part of the AAMAS 2019, the 18th International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems.The 9 revised full papers included in this volume were carefully selected from 15 submissions. They focus on finding efficient solutions to model complex social systems in such areas as economics, management, and organisational and social sciences. In all these areas, agent theories, metaphors, models, analysis, experimental designs, empirical studies, and methodological principles, converge into simulation as a way of achieving explanations and predictions, exploration and testing of hypotheses, better designs and systems.

The papers focus on theinfluence of social sciences and multi-agent systems, with a strongapplication/empirical vein, and its emphasis is stressed on exploratory agentbased simulation as a principled way of undertaking scientific research in thesocial sciences and using social theories as an inspiration to new frameworks  and developments in multi-agent systems.

The Brazilian Arti?cial Intelligence (AI) community decided in 2004 to organize an International Joint Conference, joining IBERAMIA 2006 (the 10th Ibero-American Arti?cial Intelligence Conference), SBIA 2006 (the 18th Brazilian Arti?cial Int- ligence Symposium), and SBRN 2006 (the 9th Brazilian Neural Networks Sym- sium). This decision was a consequence of the successful event organized in 2000, when the First International Joint Conference IBERAMIA/ SBIA 2000 (7th Ibero- American Arti?cial Intelligence Conference and 15th Brazilian Arti?cial Intel- gence Symposium) occurred in Brazil. Moreover, in 2006 the arti?cial intelligence community celebrated the golden anniversary of the 1956 Dartmouth Conference that marked the beginning of arti?cial intelligence as a research ?eld. th SBIA 2006 was the 18 conference of the SBIA conference series, which is the leading Brazilian conference for the presentation of AI research and applications. Since 1995, SBIA has become an international conference, with papers written in English, an international Program Committee, and proceedings published in Springer’s Lecture Notes in Arti?cial Intelligence (LNAI) series. th IBERAMIA 2006 was the 10 conference of the IBERAMIA conference - ries, which has been one of the most suitable forums for Ibero-American AI researchers (from South and Central American countries, Mexico, Spain and Portugal) to present their results. Following the SBIA and EPIA (Portuguese Conference on AI) experiences, from IBERAMIA 1998 on, it has also become an international conference with proceedings published in Springer’s LNAI series.

In recent years, social and organizational aspects of agency have become - jor research topics in MAS. Current applications of MAS in Web services, grid computing and ubiquitous computing highlight the need for using these aspects in order to ensure social order within such environments. Openness, hete- geneity, and scalability of MAS, in turn, put new demands on traditional MAS interaction models and bring forward the need to investigate the environment wherein agents interact, more speci?cally to design di?erent ways of constra- ing or regulating agents' interactions. Consequently, the view of coordination and control has been expanding to entertain not only an agent-centric persp- tive but societal and organization-centric views as well. The overall problem of analyzing the social, legal, economic and technological dimensions of agent organizations and the co-evolution of agent interactions pose theoretically - manding and interdisciplinary research questions at di?erent levels of abstr- tion. The MAS research community has addressed these issues from di?erent perspectives that have gradually become more cohesive around the four c- cepts that give title to this workshop series: coordination, organization, ins- tutions and norms.The COIN@AAMAS 2007 and COIN@MALLOW 2007 events belong to a workshopseries that started in 2005, and since then has continued with two e- tions per year. The main goalof these workshopsis to bring together researchers from di?erent communities working in theoretical and/or practical aspects of coordination, organization, institutions and norms, and to to facilitate a more systematicdiscussionofthesethemesthathaveuntillatelybeenconsideredfrom di?erent perspectives.

The 16 revised full papers presented have gone through two rounds of reviewing, selection, and improvement and were selected from 44 submissions; they present state-of-the-art research results in agent-based simulation and modeling. The papers are organized in topical sections on simulation of economic behaviour; modelling and simulation of social behaviou; applications; techniques, infrastructure and technologies as well as methods and methodologies.

The 10 revised selected and extended papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 21 submissions. The topics covered are MABS in scientometrics; MABS in politics, transit and policy; pedestrian, crowds and large scale MABS; and MABS modeling.
