Wenn westliche Industrienationen an militärischen Auslandseinsätzen teilnehmen, spiegelt diese Entscheidung stets eine sorgfältige Abwägung verschiedener internationaler und innerstaatlicher Einflussfaktoren wider. Anhand von vierzehn militärischen Auslandseinsätzen werden in dieser Studie die Teilnahmeentscheidungen von Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Österreich, Polen und Spanien miteinander verglichen und mit Hilfe politik-, medien- und kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Ansätze untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass nicht nur die Gegebenheiten in den Entsendeländern, sondern auch die Eigenschaften des jeweiligen Einsatzes maßgeblich dafür sind, ob sich Regierungen für oder gegen eine Teilnahme an einem Militäreinsatz entscheiden. Die Kombination aus länder- und einsatzspezifischen Erklärungsfaktoren verleiht den Erkenntnissen eine besondere Aussagekraft und Prognosefähigkeit.
